Pub chains have been heard grumbling about it, but it doesn't automatically mean that people don't want to meet and socialise.

I myself have given up booze since last June, when a friend of mine entered a world of personal hell because his partner went down with acute liver failure caused by cirrhosis. Mercifully, she survived (despite some very hit and miss hospital care, sometimes excellent, sometimes very poor) and she is now on a long slow convalescence, basically learning to walk again and recovering nerve sensation in her extremities. I gave up alcohol in solidarity with her, as a mark of faith that she can do it too. So far she recoils from the stuff, knowing full well that as things now are, it would be like drinking neat prussic acid.

But this has made me pay attention to what others are doing and a lot of people I know are cutting back.

Is there any evidence of a trend away from alcohol in the Russian Federation?

I think my answer will be no. In Russia, there are small groups of activists who are active anti-alcohol propaganda, but it, alas, can hardly be called qualitative: this propaganda is closely connected with nationalism and conspiracy theory. It is believed that alcohol is a weapon against the Russians. Thus, a sober way of life in Russia is mainly popular among youth far-right groups. The vast majority of Russian loves to drink and not going to give it up.

This is an intriguing contrast with far right groups in the UK, who tend to be drunken hooligans rather than sober hoologans.

The first wave of Russian neo-Nazis (1990s-2006) focused on the subculture of European skinheads, an important part of which was alcohol. Russian Nazis of the 90s drank a lot and it was not considered reprehensible. The second wave of neo-Nazis was much more radical. They preached a total rejection of alcohol and Smoking. In some cases, they even encouraged vegetarianism. Their tactics were also changed: if earlier they beat, now their purpose became murders. Sometimes the targets were people drinking alcohol. They were beaten, maimed or killed. A couple of years ago in Moscow was detained youth ultra-right group on account of which was almost 15 murders of homeless and drunk passers-by.

In general, do Russian women age well? I see pictures of beautiful Russian girls, but all the pictures I see of older Russian women show them to be short, squat, scarf-wearing hausfraus...

You are right, on the streets of Russian cities you can see a lot of elderly women with unpresentable appearance. In my opinion, this is due to cultural peculiarities. A Russian woman very often sees the meaning of her life only in marriage and childbirth, she does not think of her existence outside of this. Hard work at home and not only quickly grows old and the woman ceases to care about their appearance.

Yes one can tell rough bars in America by the smell, but they do not always have large parking lots, particularly in the inner city. I have known some urban bars in the United States to have passenger loading zones in front with ambulances parked in them.

These locations ought to be avoided. Attractive "women" in them are rare as regular customers are hostile to transvestites and actual attractive females remain unimpressed by the alcoholic losers that frequent these places. One ought not enter such a place when unaccompanied by a "regular." "Hit him over the head or stab him in the back and take his money" remain popular games in these establishments.
