You know, I've been using Linux Mint for around the last week or so and haven't even started Win 7 (I have a dual boot machine). And I can't really say that I miss Win all that much.
Yes, Linux is a bit clunky, not as polished and a bit harder to do some things. But overall? It really isn't all that bad. I could live with it. Others really need to make their machines dual boot soon and start getting used to Linux. That way, when MS does cut off all things Win 7 and 8, you can just tell MS to f@ck off. Linux works just fine. |

Problem w new mobos, cpu's & W7
Posting my recent experience for anyone who is thinking of new build or upgrade but staying w 7.
Newer mobo chipsets (going back a year or so) are rigged to make it hard or impossible to install 7. (& Maybe use 7 if already on your hd.) Most specs now say "Certified for Windows 10" or ~. A devil's way to say your most basic pc hardware is not backward compatible! For first time in Wintel history. Hard to believe, and in a way it is a lie. The cpu and chipset will run 7 awa 10, as you would expect since no basic OS diff. Some mfrs still say 7 OK, maybe with *. How I got into this. It's all about usb2 vs usb3. New mobo will have both working in bios. But at handoff to OS (as in installation) chipset disables usb2. Since typical or OEM 7 has no usb3 you have no kb or mouse input. If you have 7 w usb3 loaded in already on hd that should work (haven't done it myself). It's absurd that a port -- and especially the diff usb 3 vs 2 -- should force OS migration. But many sheeple accept it as "process of progress." On web usual torrent of misleading, outdated, and time-wasting crap on "help" sites. For a time fix was boot from a 7 ISO that had usb3 pre-loaded. If that ever worked it is now a very longshot & expect to lose lots of time & hair. How the F did MS get chipset guys to do this? Makes absolutely no sense from any POV except force use of 10. MS guys must have cum in their pants when they were able to do this. Think of the potential variations . . .

There are two updates for Windows 7 KB4338818 and KB4054530. I want to install these updates but reading about them says that there are problems with them. I don't know whether or not to install them.

The advice is not to install any of July's updates for Win 7 at this stage. There seem to be loads of problems. KB4338818 can lead to BSOD (blue screen of death); KB4054530 is for .NET and has already been re-released at least once last month. Unless you have a pressing need to install them, best advice seem to be to wait.
Keep an eye on askwoody dot com - Woody Leonhard's excellent site on all things Windows (and more). His MS-Defcon is currently at 1 - "Current MS patches are causing havoc. Don't patch". |

I've installed all of those updates, with no problems at all. At least I assume I have because there aren't any updates listed in Windows updates.

OK... I'm thick
When I get an upload request.... I go ahead with it OK... I'm trusting HOWEVER... this last month I've seen 'FAILED' uploads. June/July 2018 Those "Failed Uploads"... Hmmm They've come up again and again as 'minor' uploads beneath the regular monthly ones to update security etc I notice their failure to upgrade W7... but, possibly like many, I didn't think it was THIER FAULT... more MY FAULT. I PRESS ALL BUTTONS...cos I'm a pr@tt. AND... TODAY... I have NO waiting uploads, NO Hanging I will probably go ex-MS when they finally shut W7 down... absolutely Deff |

Those that have uploaded them and had no issues were playing russian roulette Turns out most issues only seem to be an issue for those running networks & servers be they home or business The real issue with MS optional updates and W7 is they wont be doing you any favours because they want you to upgrade to W10 Already MS has cut off support / updates for anyone using old hardware like Pentium 3 cpu PCs - that support for the rest of us continues till 1/2020 Microsoft quietly cuts off Win7 support for older Intel computers jun 19 2018 https://www.computerworld.com/articl...computers.html This article paints the perfect picture of why many will leave MS after 7 support ends in 2020 MS are now at the used car salesmen level of deception If you ever wondered why people — and organizations — are taking longer and longer to willfully install patches, take a look at what happened this month. After a disastrous start, Windows 10 patches seem to be OK, but .NET and Server patches still stink. For most of the year, we’ve seen two big cumulative updates every month for each of the supported Win10 versions. This month, so far, we’ve had three. Microsoft’s claim that it will install the Win7 and Win8.1 Monthly Rollups defies logic. The .NET patches are in such bad shape that the .NET devs have thrown in the towel. And here we sit not knowing exactly which way is up. July 25th https://www.computerworld.com/articl...nths-ever.html Last edited by buttsie; August 4th, 2018 at 01:34 AM.. Reason: adding |
