I really respect you for posting this! I did quite a bit of studying and research in writing several papers for psych. class that focused on psychosis and serial/mass killers.

What I learned is that it IS possible for people like this to be in all seriousness, emotionally normal in other aspects of their lives. Their brains, for whatever reason, were able to compartmentalize their acts of murderous brutality as being something they simply accepted as part of their "disorder" or simply how their particular brain worked.

Ted Bundy said in an interview that when he was at home in his normal evening routine, that seeing a news report on TV of a car accident where people got killed or seeing a story where children were harmed or killed would genuinely make him cry. In other words, the mind of Bundy DID have normal empathy and in fact had the ability to react with sympathy to human suffering. And yet at the same time could somehow categorize his own stalking, kidnapping, rape, and murder of young women as being a specialized, isolated part of his psyche that he found no reason to hate himself for or resist. He could be totally normal in his emotions in all other aspects and yet do things that most of us would consider unthinkable.

NOW - can we call that kind of thinking purely "evil"? I'm not so sure. We are just beginning to learn about this organ in our heads that processes literally tens of millions of bits of information every second. I'm not sure where evil as we like to think of it, fits into this.

When I look at an array of men like this saying these sorts of things, I, in all honesty do not see "monsters" or "evil". What I see are examples of a species that have an enormously, hoplessly complex internal system driven by even more vastly complex combinations of desires, wants, needs, instincts, and dynamics.

The hard truth is that every single one of us has the potential to be this - whether by a brain defect or disorder that we did not ask to be cursed with - or because of circumstances that combined in a way that led to a reaction towards life that takes on the most extreme form.

Please understand, I am not EXCUSING, or condoning or minimizing acts of rape, murder, and mass killing in and of themselves. But at the same time I am not specifically blaming these people for these acts. I believe that in many ways they are as much victims of their own brain chemistry as the victims who were unlucky enough to be in the path of their rage. I am simply saying that the quotes above raise many more questions about us as a species than they do provide answers.

Dr. Milton Friedman (1912 - 2006)

"If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years there'd be a shortage of sand."

"You know there are very few Marxists left in the world... they're all in American universities."

"The essential notion of a capitalist society ... is voluntary cooperation, voluntary exchange. The essential notion of a socialist society is force."

"The government solution to a problem is usually as bad as the problem."

"Drugs are a tragedy for addicts. But criminalizing their use converts that tragedy into a disaster for society, for users and non-users alike. Our experience with the prohibition of drugs is a replay of our experience with the prohibition of alcoholic beverages."

"The combination of economic and political power in the same hands is a sure recipe for tyranny."

"There's nothing that does so much harm as good intentions."

"A minimum-wage law is, in reality, a law that makes it illegal for an employer to hire a person with limited skills."

"One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results."

"Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program."

"The government doesn't have any money. The only power it has is to take from some and give to others."

"Many people want the government to protect the consumer. A much more urgent problem is to protect the consumer from the government."

"Whenever you try to do good with someone else's money, you are committed to using force. How can you do good with somebody else's money, unless you first take it away from them? The only way you can take it away from them is the threat of force: you have a policeman, tax collector, who comes and takes it from them."

"The most important single central fact about a free market is that no exchange takes place unless both parties benefit."

"I'm in favor of legalizing drugs. According to my values system, if people want to kill themselves, they have every right to do so. Most of the harm that comes from drugs is because they are illegal."
