When you say that American beer tastes so bad, I hope you are referring to the Macrobrew beers(Budweiser, Coors, Hamm's, Miller, Michelob, Old Milwaukee, and others). In the past America had, like Europe thousands of breweries making good beer, but then after the end of World War 2, the little breweries all over closed and really gigantic breweries opened making millions of bottles per day of just a few brands of beer. They still do that, but the old ways are coming back. Thousands of what are called "craft beer" breweries are being built all over the U.S. and making the really good beer with the European tastes that they had in the past.

You may think so, I couldn't possibly comment...other than to say, I love very many pub ales. English beer can be very flavoursome.

a whole thread on us...who knew.
Since beer seems an obvious comparison, I am a 4-time visitor to the States, mainly Hawaii and then Florida (I prefer Florida, in human terms) let me go on record saying I have no problem with even entry level American beer. Busch, Pabst, Natural...even Millers HL if I'm really hot and thirsty. Was given a Kona Hawaiian on an Alaskan airlines flight ...ok, should have asked for a mainland beer. It is also a myth that main Australian full-strength beers are higher proof than US beers...just check a VB or Fosters or Toohey's can vs a Busch or Natural can. it's actually 4.9% vol vs 5.9% vol on the US beer. I actually never found I got violently sick on the US beer, the way I had in earlier part of my life on VB. VB (Victoria Bitter) is probably the Budweiser of Australian beer. (I'm great with Bud, btw, but usually go Busch for the price saving) . Best mainstream Australian beer I've had recently was Carlton Dry. I'd recommend it, but the one I had was on a 95F+ day after a 4km bicycle ride half of it uphill, last xmas day, so, maybe cold piss would have tasted good that day. |

I think it was from a beer collector and maybe past it's use-by date, but if it is all like that, although drinkable, I'd be looking for alternatives. |

It's all great, there is nothing wrong with it. Also runs at about 40-60% price advantage over what beer costs in Australia, not counting the currency exchange rate (about $AuD4 of ours buys $US3 of yours, atm) Even with that currency rate factored in is still at least 30% cheap. Oh, our main standard can is 375ml, which is the metric form of the old 13.5fl oz can...your base can is 12oz, (metric = 355ml) so there is maybe 2 swallows more in our can. Of course, your 16oz 4-packs are popular, and I often partook. At a 7-11 or similar, 4 x 16oz (just under 500mls in metric) 4-pack, 4 like that, for $US3 plus state tax (6% in florida) so, $3.18 for 4 BIG cans? That's a deal, man. Drinking is a bargain, in America, compared to Australia.(So is smoking and also illicit narcotics, but I don't smoke or tweak). Even in Hawaii , which being a remote island tourist state is supposed to be high cost of living, at an ABC store central Waikiki,(which is like a small neat 7-11, so still not the cheapest retail option anyway) is still a good deal buying liquor by Australian standards.
