1. Why are you still using FAT filing systems? NTFS isn't affected by fragmentation in the same way and there is no need to defragment it. Are you still living in 1995?

5. For about the last 10 years, since drivers were moved from ring 0 to ring 3 in Vista, getting a blue screen of death usually means there is a serious hardware problem. It's like turning on a Mac and getting the white screen and fanfare and then nothing else, or getting a kernel panic (Macs do that)
6. Yes, that is one of the good things about Windows you aren't tied to a single hardware manufacturer's product (on Apple, that manufacturer is Foxconn)
7. Shouldn't have to do that either unless something is very broken.

Fact is, I work with Windows every day writing software and I haven't experienced the sort of problems you outline in about 15 years, other than when hardware has failed, which is not the fault of the operating system.

I don't like Microsoft, I'm in the middle of a massive argement with them at the moment, but I like Apple a great deal less.

After reading the message of Ladyluck, I suddenly remember what said one friend who sells and fixes both type of machines.

According to him, since a few years Apple users trust far too much in the security of their machines and hackers understood that very well.
He has to repair more and more Apple computers because they get viruses, worms, trojan.
Apple users are not enough careful about these threats, because Apple marketing still displays a little too much confidence about their security. And the worst, is that a lot of Apple users get these worms and trojans since several years in their computers without suspecting them.

That would be true, Like I write earlier, I use Norton, no idea why I chose that one as Trend and Kaspersky also have a product available for Macs, but I update it almost daily because I just don't trust the nerd hackers and run a scan now and then but not weekly.

So what is the difference between #3 frequent updates and your later statement of updating ever day of your Norton antivirus , which means you most likely run scans everyday and that would be #2 frequent virus scans

I have a mac, never run a virus scan, had it for 4 years and never had a problem. Although it's not as if I go on porn websites or anything

I've had five iMacs [plus an iPad] since 1999 - three of them are still working fine; my sons disappeared the other two but they might well still be functioning.

I've always bought Macs because when I first went to get a computer I thought the PC stuff looked terribly cheap and nasty.

Macs are just so much more stylish. Like their owners I suppose..

Perhaps I didn't word that real well

In the first instance I meant updates for the OS not Norton, I reckon this year there might have been maybe 6 or 7 OS updates total. How many have MS had ??? for Win 10

As for Norton I do check that daily or almost, by that I mean check and it don't mean there is actually one there

I would never say either or

Quite clearly Macs cant be accidently nobbled by the IT novice like Windows can
with their plethora of freeware ticking time bombs like registry cleaners & optimisers.

Why Windows

If your smart and run Windows with minimal software / browser extensions / plugins - the bloatware nobbled or removed.BSOds & other bullshit caused by Windows updates / malware
are a rarity in my experience.

Price - dirt cheap but i'm not talking brand new off the shelf bloatware
Support / security updates - 10-13 years versus 5
Back-up for those programs written for Windows that dont work so well on OSX
even with boot camp

I used to be hardcore windows guy...

Then 10 years ago I got a mac. I never went back..

But what am I saving money for right now? To build a nice PC again.

Mostly because of the exact reasons in the article.

I have a fondness for apple... but they have definitely lost their way. First, they were a computer company driven by a man who loved computers ("first" here is the Jobs return era) ... then they became a Computer company who also made a phone. Then they became a computer company who also made a phone and a tablet. Then they became a phone company who also made computers and tablets.

Now they are a phone company who presides over the death throws of an amazing operating system that is going to be killed off to make it more like a phone. The new "features" every cycle are more "lets put this phone feature on the desktop"

It makes me sad, as a mac fan. The hardware is getting worse. The decisions are getting dumber every time. I wont buy a laptop without a magsafe or similar connection, i have kids and animals, and the magsafe has saved a laptop more than once.. to remove something that was as core and identifiable a part of their computers was just a stupid move and served no purpose.

They don't listen to the industry or the consumers anymore, they stick their fingers in their ears and pretend to know best.

Jobs was hardheaded, but reasonable. Cook is trying to emulate the hardheadedness but fails to recognize the reasonability needed to balance that.

I'm on the 'apple side' of this discussion, and I haven't actually had a play with one, but the new macbook was a big disappointment to me. I thought they were going to do something interesting, but it was hugely underwhelming.

I think Jobs is given way too much credit, Wozniak was the genius in the beginning, Steve Jobs' talent was his ability to recognise genius and surround himself with it. He was a publisher rather than an author, a producer rather than a director.
