Go ahead and patch, but watch out for potential problems.

BUT patching might be as bad as malware depending on your version of 10

The root cause is the same — a key driver gets uninstalled by the install of the updates and not put back down again.

If you are one of the unlucky ones that was damaged or impacted by this and you’ve somehow managed to get your system working again, I would say turn off the windows update service and hang tight. Microsoft is working on a permanent fix.

Unless you’re running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709), now’s a good time to get all outstanding Microsoft patches installed.

I'm on win 7 without the latest update using chrome with ad-blockplus / script safe / plugins disabled / no coin / disconnect with no issues
Yes, we are treated by Microsoft like guinea pigs but also like milk cows.

Microsoft is implementing a new policy and try to force other application distributors to do the same.

This is worrying, even terrifying.

But Microsoft is not the only Company doing that.
Perhaps it is our view of capitalism that should be changed.

The computer programming is in crisis and Microsoft is only trying to survive.
The problem is bigger than Microsoft.

Did you analyse completely your disk drive with a good anti-virus?
Perhaps you simply have a virus?

I remember back a few years ago when it was a slog and drudgery to get it functional, not advisable for the majority of PC users at home.
As posted this the the route I took. This laptop is old ( Core 2 2GHz and by even current i3's limited graphics ) but Mint Mate works fine. At a time of my choice I updated it from 18.1 to 18.3 a few weeks ago taking less than 20 minutes to download and install.

With Win10 you always have to be prepared for the next boot to install updates before being able to use, assuming of course everything actually still works.

Restarts due to updates?

Try Settings -> Updates and Security -> Restart Options -> Schedule a Time

Default Windows 10 S

Microsoft had presented Windows 10 S in may 2017 arguing the S is for simplicity and security.
It was primarily intended for students.

Now they announce there will not be a version Windows 10 S anymore.

Do you think it a good news.

No and I am not surprised.

Because in the next upgrades all users of Windows 10 will have a supplementary option S.
It could be this year or next one.
Those leaving this option activated will find themselves unable to install
applications that are not on the Windows Store.

It is the way Microsoft found to induce developers to pass by Windows Store (and pay).
I can confirm in the last upgrade I had difficulty in finding a way to change some applications by default.

Microsoft is trying to have only one system for everyone, exactly like the Germans had a saying:
'Ein folk, ein Reich, ein Führer' (one people, one country, one chief) but much more suibtly.
