Default Problem with CD-R in Windows Explorer

Can any VEF techie help with this problem? I have a rather old disc (but it is in perfect condition) which has been recorded onto a CD-R as VCD format. When I load this into my laptop's DVD slot Windows Explorer recognises the disc and display the index and contents (so I know folders and files are on there and it can 'see' them) but I cannot do anything else with it. The disc consists of about 100 JPGs and a similar number of short MPG movie files. I cannot preview the JPGs and I cannot play back the movie clips - I tried several players including VLC. Also I cannot copy/paste any file onto my HDD or elsewhere. With all of this the effect is the same - the laptop just sits there, stuck on timer. I do have a rather old DVD/CD player which is compatible with VCD so I can play back individual movie clips (or display JPGs) OK there - this does have a SCART connection and I do have a DVD-R recorder so it would be theoretically possible to copy using that method though this would involve a big investment in time as each file would need to be done manually. What I want to be able to do is to copy the disc in its entirety onto my HDD. This seems to me to be some sort of compatibility problem. Any thoughts or ideas? I am on Win 8.1.

If it was home-recorded and not factory cut, the disc may be going bad. I have had some data CDs go bad to the point where I could not retrieve some files from them, but I could retrieve others, and see the file structure on the disc.

Somebody here told me they expect the lifetime of home-recorded CD/DVD media to be about 10 years, my discs were a bit older than that. If yours is like 15 years old, that could be the problem.

I would clone it to an ISO on your hard drive before going too crazy with the toothpaste!

Perhaps the VCD is open for writing? You could try writing a small text file and closing (prevent further writing).

I note that you have a SCART connector so must be in Europe. But Region is only for DVDs not CDs.

First of all I would try another CD/DVD reader to read the disc, if necessary in another computer.
next try would be disk repair software. In the past I have used Isobuster and CDmage with succes, but I'm not sure if they work with new versions of Windows.

Totally agree with this. Use something like imgburn to make an iso image of the disc and if it works then just mount the iso as a virtual image. Actually, if it works then I'd suggest burning a new copy off as well.

EDIT: Having said that, I think a VCD would come out as a cue/bin combo if it worked. It's a bit trickier to mount those but I'd worry about getting a decent read off the disc first and then burn a new copy if it does work.
