I had to save the best for last:

Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and other hard rock / heavy metal / hair metal acts of the '70s and '80s that I very much like.

Without them, it is unlikely that U.S. metal would have been as good or powerful.

"NWOBHM" comes to mind...

Just watched a report on Russia Today. A retired football hooligan who wrote a book about it went to Russia and the head of the hooligans had read his book in russian and told him admiringly "England is the mother of hooliganism"
We must temper this with the thoughts of the mayor of Krakow when english fans were due to visit. "I prefer drunk english fans to sober german fans"

Taken ill with a heart attack on Thursday - straight to A&E (ER)

Angioplasty on Saturday, 3 stents fitted and I am okay. As the post op discharge note said "Patient Discharge Condition : Alive" - it really does.

The care and understanding I received was exceptional, and not just from the clinical staff but everyone. Even down to arranging things to support my mother (whose carer I am) while I was hors de combat. The NHS is now recognised as the best healthcare system in the world and rightly so.

I am now home and recovering. Will be back posting soon - so you have been warned.

We have strayed from the original premise which is what England,correction, the british isles gave to the world. How about the modern world as in steel, concrete and glass?
Concrete was around in roman times but Portland cement is exported everywhere to make concrete that sets underwater. The romans could not produce hundreds of tons in a batch. However in most uses concrete is about as strong as weetabix without steel reinforcing bars (rebar). Steel has been around for over a milennium, but to produce ten tonsinstead of ten pounds took the Bessemer process. It needed tweaking to get all the carbon out so the correct amount could be added for exact characteristics.
Glass is over three thousand years old, but a bloke doing the washing up watching a film of grease on the water got the idea of floaating molten glass on a continuous layer of tin to make uniform thickness. This gave predictable material characteristics which could be manipulated and tempered to make toughened glass, safety glass etc.
Inventing is one thing, but mass production as an industrial process is the real key.

Top Gear, the original with the three stooges. Shown nearly everywhere on the planet (not france). Why, because it seemed every three weeks there would be a review of the brand that is consistently voted the coolest on the planet: Aston Martin.
