Kevin here. In America most people who drive on the expressways where the posted speed limit is 55 mph go as much as 80 mph and the Illinois State Police who patrol the expressway don't care, because it thins out the traffic more. Also their main job is to look for drunk drivers and for people who have had accidents.

What about in Australia. Do many drivers who are driving on Highway 1 or on The Great Ocean Road drive much faster than the posted speed limits, and who patrols these roads?

The Great Ocean Road It's not a road to speed on unless you know it well, and that's coming from me I can and do only because I do know it very well and I'll only do it mid week when it's quiet traffic wise.

A 21 minute video of a short section of it speeding,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrUuDhS7xEo

This is when it's quiet, you couldn't do that on a weekend or most summer days between Christmas and late January.

Hardly do it anymore, but at night, late late night it's much more fun, traffic is almost non existent

In my brief experience, the Aussie cops are quite strict.

All I saw were warnings of "double de-merits" if you overdid it - and I was advised not to risk it.

Kevin again. In America our expressways all have four lanes for each direction of traffic. The lane on the farthest right is for the slower drivers and for trucks, but the three outer lanes are for the drivers who drive at great speeds. There are even special express lanes that only are open certain times of the day when traffic starts to get heavy. I used to use these when I would go hiking. I would enter the special express lane and bring my car up to 75 mph.

I saw that youtube.com video and the Great Ocean Road has only one lane for each direction so if you are behind a slower driver and traffic coming from the other direction is heavy then you are fuc...ed. Aren't any of your roads made with multi lanes?

I think cops are expected to fill a 'quota' of sorts over time but not in a specific shift, for revenue

That's to dupe the public the government is strict on road safety, double demerit points are used over long weekends when there will be more traffic.
The government ain't serious about road safety at all, their only solutions are lower speed limits and bigger fines If they were actually serious about it they would make it mandatory to learner drivers to attend and pass an advanced diving course rather than how to parallel park a car or how and when to give way ..... But there's no money, revenue, from having skilled and capable drivers. That's why I get angry over speed limits

You couldn't make the Ocean Road multi lane, plus you wouldn't want to ruin more of that natiional park, The Otway Ranges.

But yes our highways and freeways are.
