On the subject of protecting your content from these other sites: this doesn't work for image posts (and it doesn't work with that site that's an exact copy of VEF) but I protect my - admittedly small number of - downloadable files by encrypting them and making the password my username in reverse. That means the file is useless to anyone who downloads it from Asymo etc because they've attributed it to a different user.

Every so often I Google my name in reverse, and if I ever find it, I'll change tack: then I'll put the password on my user page, under something like Interests (not Location), which only another member would have access to.

This is a clever way of avoiding "harvesting" of web content, meant for members. I'd rather support members who contribute, than non-members that harvest, mirror and don't contribute.

Simple "encryption" can be achieved with WinRAR. Apparently, the odds of breaking into a RAR archive without a password are millions to one.

There are various free password crackers out there. I tried one once on a RAR file with a fairly short password (8 characters, I think). It basically went through every possible combination of ASCII characters (something called a 'brute force' attack). But it seemed to run through them very slowly. I calculated that it would take 273 years to try them all!

I have noticed that a site called Porncoven has heaps of threads copied exactly from this site now. Even has us as added as 'Guest Members' for our own Threads !!

It's the nature of the internet. If you don't want your stuff ripped and shared everywhere don't put it online. When I put something up I consider it free for the taking.

Yes, my point was that Admin may like to know that all their hard work is being mirrored for free somewhere else.

I seem to recall when they first appeared Admin said in no uncertain terms after a posse was formed - no harassing because it will only come back on us.

That first site ended up adding banners leading back to VEF
Thats probably the best result given you cant control anything online once its out there

I still think having these addresses in a text file for those days
when VEF has server issues is actually a good thing.
