In the context of a private conversation saying to a widow of a fallen soldier / policeman / fireman / etc that they knew the risks when they signed up is not insulting .
Unless youre a New York Times reader ( which I understand is like our horrid Guardian ) and you see an opportunity to condemn a president you think robbed the rightful Clinton heir . Get over yourself . |

Oops
"White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, criticizing Congresswoman Frederica Wilson of South Florida, misrepresented a 2015 speech she made at the opening of a new FBI building in Miramar, an exclusive South Florida Sun Sentinel video of her speech shows."
"Wilson said Kelly’s comment was a fabrication, that she wasn’t even elected to Congress when the funding for the building was approved. A Sun Sentinel video of the event supports Wilson’s version of the events." http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/br...020-story.html

Sure these men know the risk, but it's not soemthing to throw in a fresh widow's face. If you're calling a widow and saying "you know, he had it coming, he knew those were the risks" and have nothing else to add, then it's better not to say anything. It's not the best thing to bring up if you're trying to comfort someone. I don't think he does it on purpose, he just doesn't know how to do empathy. Edit: it could always be worse, he could've said he doesn't like dead soldiers/policemen/... , but prefers the ones who win. |

Yeah, well, Trump is an entirely self-centered man.
Always has been. It's only natural that he would stumble over the correct words to say when trying to console someone else about their loss; when you don't care about anyone or anything beyond yourself and your own needs, expressing compassion for someone else's plight is an alien concept...thus, the words or sentiments don't come naturally. Particularly when you're doing it because you feel obligated to, as opposed to actually wanting to. The sad part is how Kelly felt obliged to publicly follow Trump down the bullshit rabbit hole and second Trump's lies. However, Kelly had plenty of advance warning prior to taking the position that the stench of Trump's lies wafts onto everybody around Trump: Kelly knew the risks when Kelly signed up. |

In the context of a private conversation . Except in this instance there was a democrat supporter sat waiting for the moment they could take offence . You lost . Put up a better candidate in 4 years time and stop trying to use sabotage to undermine the current president . Grow up and admit your own failure. |

Note to Press: Give It a Rest. He's human. OK.
I have long harbored a deep antipathy to Donald Trump. There is really no good way to express condolences in these situations and it is very easy to say something stupid and inappropriate. The press is playing this up into a controversy, but I would much prefer they do some serious investigation and reporting on substantive issues.

Seriously now: Not everything is politics and improper condolences (even when not intended, as i think is the case here) will hurt someone, no matter what political opinion they have. I admit i don't know the fine details of this case, but i think you are assuming too much that all people are waiting and hoping to get offended. Not everything is a trap. For a president that loves to go on about respecting the flag, the troops and all things American, he might try to be more respectful to his fallen troops. You know, lead by example. |

Bob Corker says Trump 'utterly untruthful president'
Tennessee Senator Bob Corker has unleashed a blistering attack on US President Donald Trump, after the two Republicans traded insults on Twitter.
In a series of television interviews, Mr Corker accused the president of lying, adding that he debased the US and weakened its global standing. Mr Trump fired back on Twitter, calling the top Senator a "lightweight" who "couldn't get re-elected". The pair are due to meet at a Senate lunch to discuss tax reform on Tuesday. Jeff Flake: Republican senator quits with attack on Trump
A US Republican senator says he will not seek re-election, delivering a fierce attack on President Donald Trump.
Arizona Senator Jeff Flake said "reckless, outrageous and undignified behaviour" at the top of the US government was dangerous to democracy. Mr Trump has previously called Mr Flake "toxic". Before confirming his decision in a speech to the Senate, Mr Flake told the Arizona Republic newspaper "there may not be a place for a Republican like me in the current Republican climate or the current Republican Party". Taking to the floor, he said he did not enjoy criticising the president but felt it was "a matter of duty and conscience". "We must never regard as 'normal' the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals," he said. He lamented the "flagrant disregard for truth or decency, the reckless provocations, most often for the pettiest and most personal reasons". Details: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-41743473 Sorry, but I thought the Democrats were the opposition? Jeez....
