The complexity of the Tiger tank design was also a issue, all of the extra parts in the gear box, suspension system, engine system, plus the size of the gun made the tank over weight and difficult to manufacture.

Transporting the Tiger Tank to the battlefield was a slow process as well, the tank required a sperate set of narrow transport tracks that required the outer road wheels to be removed and reattached after the tank was transported to the front by train. Then the crew had to take the time to prep the tank for battle by reattaching the wheels and combat tracks before battle.

Still, you can't take anything away from how effective the Tiger I was, the Wermacht still depended on it through out the war. But the Panther is still a better tank hands down, it's the first ancestor of the mondern main battle tank.

Having the mind set of a five year old, I thought id jump straight into the stupid end of the pool with this the p1500 ratte by Krupp. For those unfamiliar it was a proposed super tank weighing in at 1500 tons carrying 2 800mm main guns, several 128mm secondary guns and a selection of 20 and 30 mm flak guns for self defense. It was to be powered by either 2x8000hp man ship engines or 8x2000hp MAN u-boat engines. By anybodies standards this thing was as big as a ship and probably would have pushed materials technology beyond even the Nazis abilities, but god you'd have papped your self if something twice the height of a maus super tank came rumbling over the hill.




As far as real tanks go, Ive always had a soft spot for the Swedish s-tank. Designed as a defensive tank to stop the pessky russkies from rolling into IKEA land, it had a fixed 105mm gun with an auto loader and to aim it the whole hull was tilted up or down on adjustable suspension or turned left or right on its tracks but it had a total height nearly half that of a conventional tank allowing a very low profile when dug in. Also those vertical grills along the front of the hull are a Swedish version of Kremlin Armour designed to stop AT missiles.

Those things need a long logistics tail. Each must be followed by 100 tankers carrying rocket fuel + hamburgers & coke for the crew

Shermans were also known as 'Ronsons' by the British, after a well-known brand of cigarette lighter, whose slogan was 'always lights first time'.

The problem early Sherman's had was the engine was the continental R-975 aircraft engine that ran on avgas and whilst powerful and compact it had a raging thirst meaning they had to carry much more fuel when compared to they're German diesel powered equivalents, and avgas as we all know goes up like a bugger.

That's not quite right, uli. The Leo is made at Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co KG. The company Rheinmetall produces the 120 mm smoothbore gun, which is also used in the M1 and other modern battle tanks like the Merkava. The smoothbore gun is produced by many countries under license of Rheinmetall / Rheinmetall Waffe Munition.

I would respectfully point out that the Tiger I was Germany's first serious attempt at building a heavy tank and, as a result, many lessons were learned from it. A lot of these lessons would influence the development of the Tiger II as well as that of the Panther G.

Very few nations can get tank design right first time... particularly when they're in the middle of a war!

I have to agree, the Tiger is quite a technical achievement, when it was first introduced in Russia and North Africa at the time, there was no tank Western or Russian tank that could match the Tiger I's firepower in a head to head fight, especially the range and accuracy of the gun equipped on the Tiger I.

The armor was also good. I once read a story about a tiger which got a hit in the chain system in the middle of a fight. After the hit, the Tiger was just partially maneuverable. The tank commander decided to withdraw from the battle and as a wounded tank, he was naturally a welcome target for numerous enemy tanks and antitank-units. Nevertheless, the commander drove to the nearest repair stop. About 80 km. There, they counted about 120 more hits. This tank was combat-ready the next day.

Unfortunately, i don't know where i've read that story.

During a 6 hour combat, a Tiger was hit 227 times, 14 of those 52mm, 11 were 76.2mm. Not one hit penetrated. Its bearings and joints were shot up, 2 axles didn't work, several AT rounds had hit the tracks, it had driven over 3 mines and it STILL continued on for another 60km.
