The Rising Sun
The Decline and Fall of the Japanese Empire,
by John Toland

Ever since I was a schoolboy, I've been an avid student of the second world war. John Toland was a brilliant and insightful historical writer, and this is probably the most absorbing, and complete account of Japan's downfall that I've ever read.

Default Books on Repeat

I don't often re-read books, but sometimes I am in the mood to devour something familiar: often when I am not feeling well. These are typical targets:

Len Deighton: Funeral in Berlin (his best, I think, wonderfully complicated and cynical. The film was appalling, someone should remake it as a 6 part series.)
John Le Carre: Tinker Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Leslie Charteris: The Saint in New York (plus many other of the early Saint books)
Ian MacDonald: Revolution in the Head
Greil Marcus: Mystery Train
Tom Wolfe: The Right Stuff

I have read all the above numerous times.

I have read this, and it is very interesting.
Fortunately, we do not hang anyone in the UK now.
