Should black nylons ever be worn with white stilettos?

On Marlon’s ‘Don’t know where else to put them’ small vintage sets thread, I posted two replies – Posts 2501, 2509 on this controversial but delightful 1960’s fashion.


Not everyone approved of this exciting fashion at the time, and I have further comments to make on the subject. Not wanting to clog up Marlon’s small set thread with these observations, I have created this new thread for lovers of the fashion.

Back in the swinging sixties my delicious wife (Now my long time ex-wife) and I went for a stroll. She wore a tight-fitting brown dress, a short dark brown fur jacket, dark grey nylons that were almost black…and white stilettos. She looked mouth-watering. I was thinking about the delight of unzipping that dress when we returned home, when a middle-aged woman approached us and aggressively told my ex that she should never wear white high heels with black stockings, especially not when wearing a fur coat! She said it was in bad taste and it made her look very common. She then walked away, leaving my ex distraught. Back home my ex was in no mood for having her dress unzipped. But looking very common or not she continued to delight me by wearing black nylons with white stilettos. It had become the fashion among trendy young women at the time.

Later, wearing white PVC knee-length boots with black nylons became the fashion.




My ex was very scornful of this change in fashion. She and none of her friends ever wore them. She preferred to wear black leather stiletto-heeled knee-high boots worn with a very short black leather mini-skirt. Which was fine by me.

Along the Thames corridor to the East of London, fur coat, black stockings and white stilettos has been standard uniform for a long time now.

Nylons should be worn with shoes, I think. Black court shoes or even an ankle strap. I’m generally ok with the white shoes, although not my preferred choice. I’ve just gotta see those lovely black nylons.
