Image viewer options?
I'm having a problem with Windows Photo Viewer eating my images. Looking in my libraries I will see several photos with just the icon there and when you click on it there is a message "Windows photo viewer can't open this picture because either photo viewer doesn't support this file format or you don't have the latest updates to photo viewer".
So whatever that was in there is now gone forever. I would like to get something that's more stable without having to worry that my pictures could just totally disappear in an instant. A friend of mine suggested Picassa but I'm not sure about it since it's sort of tied into Google+. I would also like something where you can view the image using your mouse wheel instead of putting the cursor on it and dragging it. Also where you can view the entire image without a border at the bottom. Kind of like you do when viewing an image in Imagebam. Any suggestions?

I've used XnView for years. Free, with a lot of features, and supports more than 500 image formats.

Have you previously successfully viewed these images using Windows Photo Viewer but now cannot, of was it that you viewed & downloaded them in your browser but only then found Windows Photo Viewer didn't support their format? Image software applications generally do not "eat" images, so I suspect your images are probably not "gone forever". If you have used your browser to download an image file to your disk it will generally remain there intact. OK, poorly written applications could theoretically corrupt a file, as could disk errors/failures, etc. Have you tried viewing these "problem" images in your browser? Like justme21 I too recommend IrfanView. |

I've heard a lot of good about Irfan. Also ACDSee will cover your needs. AFAIK older versions are free.
Only MicroSoft programs will tell you need updates, to see JPG :-). |

Can't say that I have, as effCup mentioned the programs generally don't cause your pics to disappear.
Try right clicking on the picture icon and select 'Properties'. That should tell you what kind of picture format it is, such as .jpg, .png, .gif etc. |

Yes they were previously there and have just disappeared. I have viewed them in the past. I'm not sure how to view an image in my browser. You mean cut it and move it to my desktop? If you look at the properties or just hover the cursor over them, instead of it being 200KB or 900KB or whatever it is, they are all like 348BYTES. Not kilobytes or megabytes but BYTES. Whatever was there is gone and has been replaced by just the generic icon that you get before it gets filled in with your thumbnail. I have Ifranview.
