I was in Prague about 10 years ago and was surprised to see hardcore porn on display in shop windows and Hardcore DVD's available and on full view in a record/video shop similar to HMV.

In Ibiza in a gift shop they had vibrators and dildos next to the Barbie dolls on the bottom shelf. I suppose they thought it was the 'toy' section.
We found it so weird. |

If you've ever got some time to kill at Schiphol Airport Amsterdam, browse the hardcore porn dvd's in the gift shops right next to the mainstream films

some xxx dvd and some xxx magz are (were?) available in some regular newspapers stores in Paris. The ones in small houses (not the big ones in train stations)
Private magz were often available there. I have never bought xxx magz in such stores. I prefered to buy second hand xxx magz in Paris in some "bouquinistes' stands near the Seine river. Have a look near the metro station called "Pont marie" Private magz are a way too expensive for me. Long time i didnt buy any magz. |

I was on holiday in France in 1994, and went in to one of thier large chain supermarkets.
I was with my two young daughters who whizzed over to the video section to see the Disney films. I was browsing myself and on the top shelf about 5 or 6 feet high towards the end of the rack I saw the title German Anal-thought it was a punk group!! To my surprise upon close inspection it was a porn film. |

Widely on sale in Italy, where you can pick up your Angelica Bella or Jessica Rizzo flick at the station bookstall or virtually any "edicola" (newsstand). A few years back, I saw a newsstand in Piazza del Duomo, Milan, which served up its mucky books alongside guidebooks to the adjacent cathedral. Maybe the oddest juxtaposition is in Austria - the Beata Uhse sex shop at Vienna International Airport, right next to the chapel!
What baffles me is why we Brits put up with nonsense like the Video Recordings Act and the Obscene Publications Act, let alone the idiocy currently going through parliament in teh Criminal (in)Justice Bill. |

I think Denmark is still the most liberal about pornography even though they've rolled back the extreme permissiveness of the '70s. As I understand they did away with all restrictions and just let it rip. Soon they had busloads of hardcore CP and beastie, so the legislature said, "OK, we need a few guidelines here!"
These European countries are way less hung up about pornography and who sees it. They also have lower per capita rates of rape, teen pregnancy, molestation, and STDs. Some people take this as evidence we should loosen up in America about porn, but if we did what Europe does, we'd just be fucked-up about sex with easier porn access. Not sure we'd see the benefits unless we relented with this shame-ridden puritanical attitude that creates the Mark Foleys and Ted Haggards of the country!!! |

Copenhagen Airport sells hardcore CC mags in their usual magazine store. In Sweden every gas station has the regular Swedish porn mags available.

It was a little odd to see hardcore animal sex videos in a window in a shopping precinct in Roskilde (Denmark) a few years back. Didn't seem to do anyone any harm though - very nice people, the Danes.
