Alessandro Marcello was an Italian nobleman and composer during the Baroque period. Being the son of an Italian senator he enjoyed a confortable life that gave him time to compose music and he never needed to struggle to find work. Marcello composed concertos, church music, vocal music and some other works. One of his most popular compositions is what I have. A set of 6 violin concertos called La Cetra(the fiddling). |

Francesco Onofrio Manfredini was a lesser known Italian violinist, church musician and composer during most of the Baroque period(he lived for 78 years). Very little of Manfredini composed works survived to the modern period. One exceptional thing did. His set of 12 great concerti grossi. Number 12 is most remembered because of it's designation "the Christmas concerto" Following is a statement written on the back of the case this disc comes in. "Little is known about the life of the Italian composer Francesco Onofrio Manfredini. He seems to have had a connection with the court of Monaco during the reign of Antoine I, to whom his Concerti grossi Opus. 3 are dedicated. His name may well have disappeared, had he not composed a Christmas Concerto(number 12), which forms part of these twelve charming Concerti grossi. They show the influence of Antonio Vivaldi and demonstrate a gift for easy melodic invention." |
