As an air force brat, I lost most of my old friends from high school due to moving around every couple years. My oldest friend and acquaintance goes only as far as my sophomore year in high school. After being best friends in high school at an air force base in Spain, we went our separate ways after graduation and both eventually met again in America after staying in touch by post cards and letters (remember those?) in 1985 where I was a groomsman in his wedding despite the fact that I was then living in NY and he was in Idaho. Then some years later we lost touch again since we lived far apart. We reconnected in 2005 after 20 years. Now we get together a couple times a year and bring our girlfriends/wives for vacations at his boss' time share in Florida.

I can certainly relate to KingKeigh. I'm also Government Issue and spent most of my younger years, moving from place to place and country to country. That lifestyle makes it hard to build long-lasting friendships. However since my Dad's last posting, I now have several friends that I've known for many years. My oldest is Roger. We've been friends since the fall of '67, followed by Dave since '72, Merv '74 and Peter '86. Good long-time friends are rare and to be treasured.

My oldest friend is a girl I grew up next door too. At her wedding I was her man of honour. The world's only one ever I suspect.
Oddly enough, we have never had or developed any romantic feelings for each other, but we are today still the best of friends. It took her husband and my wife some time to get their heads around that I can tell you. I talk to her about stuff I wouldn't bring up with my male friends and it is good to have one person you can really talk to. |

I have many female friends - some exes, some not - with whom I can be totally natural pals. But my ex-fiancée, although I refer to her as Australian, grew up just around the corner. We first met at infants school in January 1963. It was a very strange quirk of fate, too unbelievable to make even a convincing novel, that brought us back together despite 43 years and 10,000 miles following her emigration in 1990. It's over now but it was very odd! |

I was a groomsman for a friend's wedding in the early 90's. His bride had a man of honor.
