Hoyya the word WITCH is a corruption of the word WHICH, because only those people seemed to know which things were right in the Medieval times in England and the broomstick derives from sweeping away evil spirits by people who were afraid-suspected witches were either burnt at the stake OR drowned because the reasoning was if you were a witch you floated to the surface, if you drowned you weren't - you can see why the so-called whiches (witches) were the cleverer ones. There are two types black and white-a white witch uses herbs and can create potions such as love or luck, whereas the black witch concerntrates more on the evil casting of spells but this of course is all rubbish. White witches are many in England including the lovely Marina. Merlin was a wizard or magician and the story goes that he lived in a cave near the rocks in the town of TINTAGEL (which I have been to) and King Arthur lies somewhere (possibly under the town of Glastonbury (where the BIG music festival takes place) 'asleep' ready to fight off any marauders that threaten this land. If you look back through history it is fascinating to try to work out what is myth & legend and what is real with proof being found for some of them.

Another example is ROBIN HOOD-there was a Robin of Locksley once but there is no record of him robbing the rich to give to the poor-although he did do charitable work for the poor and was a lord of some sort. However SHERWOOD FOREST does exist where he and his outlaws are reputed to have hidden. Finally a sheriff (as in the Sheriff of Nottingham) does exist but this is a corruption of the word SHIRE-REEVE, the reeve was the head man of the shire or district and there is a real Sheriff of Nottingham.
