This is a map and photos of another type of wetland trail in Illinois. Volo Bog located between the towns of Volo and Fox Lake in Lake County, Illinois. A bog is quite different than a marsh. Where a marsh is just a lowland area with 2-6 feet of water covered by special grasses like sedge grass and cattails, a bog is also water usually near an acidic pond or lake. The surface is covered with this stuff called peat which is nothing more than dead bits of grasses that have been compacted over thousands of years. Hundreds of years ago there were thousands of bogs all over the U.S. but development has destroyed most of them. Hundreds of years ago people who did not have a source of coal to use in their fireplaces could come to a peat bog and cut out hard brick-like chunks of peat and use it to heat their homes. Most bogs also are covered by a type of moss called sphagnum. The moss and peat together is about 18 inches thick. A not too heavy person could step off the trail onto the bog and walk around, but I would not recommend it. The trail as you can see is boardwalk and is about 1 mile long, and the bog itself is about 48 acres in size.

This is what I had for lunch yesterday. A big TUNA salad sandwich from Pot Belly sandwich shop. It is on multi-grain bread and is filled with lettuce, hot peppers, cucumbers, pickles, tomato, onion bits and avocado bits. I also got a small bag of low fat potato chips and three big cookies for dessert( sugar, oatmeal-raisin, and double chocolate chip).
