One reason I avoided the Windows 10 upgrade was that I didn't have a spare machine to try the upgrade out with. I just couldn't afford to hose my working machines, or spend stressful days and nights trying to fix any problems with the upgrade. When I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 I staggered that upgrade, trying one machine first then applying it to others. I did not have that luxury this time out.

Bravo, Mister Buttsie on a piece of clear insight.

I join Rick Danger in his praise of Buttsie who could afford to stay away from Windows 10.

Personnally I was and still is wary of Microsoft and their gifts.
Like Helen of Troy said 'I am wary of the Greeks when they Make gifts' (of course she referred to the Ancient Greeks).
I had Windows 10 on a notebook since a year.

Then an upgrade went wrong and I chose to revert to Windows 7 by using the special part of the drive which was left untouched and still is (thanks to the technical services of Hewlett Packard).

I struggled to keep my machine untouched by the upgrade frenzy of Microsoft.
Then on the eve of the so-called last day for free upgrade I took the risk of upgrading.
Everything went fine.

So I upgraded my main machine too.
Without problem I must say.

Now I am in the process of getting really acquainted with Windows 10.
This system is still NOT MATURE.
There are occasions (rare I admit) when to quit I find myself in an infinite loop.

The system is not quicker than Windows 7.

There is no change in the system file.
I have the impression to having reverted to Vista and we all know what failure it was.

And what is MOST ANNOYING is I always have to take care of not choosing a Microsoft application.

It is like a coomercial application which always revert to buying a new tool from Microsoft.

I am in the process of deactivating the parts of the system I do not want.
But I know that with the impending upgrade I will have to redo it.

Why did I change will you ask?
It is simple: I am a programmer and so I am involved in all changes, even if I don't like it.

It depends.
After the Greeks had left the siege of Troy and were departed (that was a feint) the Great Priest of Troy who was Laokoon is supposed to have said it according to Homer's works.

But others have attributed these words to Helen.
I was referring to the Helen of Troy played by Rossana Podesta in the movie which was relased in 1952, I think.

But you are right. For a purist it was Laokoon and not Helen.

The other side of the FREE offer is

Dont be driven to upgrade by mention of the price of W10 post 29/7

Windows 7 was being touted as a cheap upgrade for 40 dollars
but 200 if you didnt move from XP

As many pointed out in the XP thread you could buy a W7 PC / laptop months later for 80-100 with a W7 disc included on ebay

Whats clear with every new MS operating system

Your always smarter waiting till at least the 2nd version is out and shown to be stable
No amount of alpha beta testing will ever iron out all the bugs on all the PCs and their unique set-ups with some 15,000+ pieces of 3rd party software in the mix.

Windows 98 2nd edition , XP - had at least 3 upgrades , 7.1 , 8.1 , W10 - anniversary

If you have a lot of software or use your PC for things other than leisure activities
its always a gamble

Microsoft's "free" upgrade is like "free" sex after marriage.

There ain't nothin' "free" about it.

The biggest question I've had with Windows 10 is the timing of the upgrade. With time left on full support for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, why the big push? Of course, we know now what Microsoft's end game is.

Some will argue that Windows 10 is a much needed upgrade from Windows 7. Others will say that it fixes the flaws found in Windows 8. The very same people who make that argument then conveniently overlook the hesitancy of those who went with Windows 8; i.e., you should upgrade because of the flaws in Windows 8 but forget about those flaws and just blindly trust Microsoft and install Windows 10. And of course, forget about Vista all together. To my view, Microsoft has gotten Windows right in only 1 out of the last 5 chances. Hardly a track record that encourages trust.

Was it "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts" or more appropriately "Beware of gifts BEARING Greeks"?

In the case of the "free" Windows 10 upgrade, the hidden costs of upgrading, the hidden advertising, having to pay for everything from the ad-free version of Solitaire to Groove Music, potentially paying a subscription for Windows, and of course not knowing if the next upgrade to Windows 10 may be your last itself harkens us back to the ancient Greeks and the Trojan Horse.

Actually I've had to admit that if I was really interested in sex, I would NOT have gotten married.

Actually my sex life ended when my subscription to Playboy ran out twenty years ago........

I once had an intelligent, stunningly beautiful woman working for me. On my last day in the office before I left to get married, she left me a voice mail message saying that if she had known I was leaving she would have hugged and kissed me. My response to her message was "If you had been hugging and kissing me I WOULD NOT be leaving!".

Yes, the good Lord does have a sense of humor................

What I meant was 'Beware of Microsoft bearing gifts'.

I apologise for creating such confusion.

Isn't this being a tad dramatic?

Personally, auto updating was never switched on in the first place, then I just did a quick registry tweak to kill the GWX nag when it finally appeared (it never came back), made sure I read the notes for any updates I did apply and then eventually switched off updating completely for the last few months of the free offer.

TBH I'm still taking stories of people's machines being updated without them doing anything with a pinch of salt.

I do not think I am a bit tad dramatic when I say that Satya Nadella's methods are akin to those of Alf Capone in Chicago or Benito Mussolini in Rome.
