Now we come to the composer who has always been my all time favorite: Antonio Vivaldi born in Venice in 1648. He started out, as a young man learning how to play the violin and soon became a master of this instrument. Later he entered the priesthood and was often given the nickname "the red priest" because of his striking red hair which he said was a family trait. As a priest he was employed in this home for abandoned children for more than 30 years. In this home was a group of female older children who created their own orchestra and Vivaldi composed much of his music for this musical ensemble. Vivaldi was also a great writer of the opera. He wrote forty great operas in his lifetime and a great number of church works. Vivaldi was also given another nickname "the concerto king" because he composed concertos for almost every instument used in Baroque orchestras. Altogether he composed almost 800 works of music. 250 of those were violin concertos including his most famous set of four violin concertos known as "The Four Seasons" which has been recorded by hundreds of orchestras around the world. I have a great deal of discs of music by Antonio Vivaldi. There was a string instrument used during the Baroque period called the viola d'amore. It had six strings compared to the violin, the viola, the cello and the double bass which all had only four strings. The viola d'amore had the range of the violin and the viola , but it also had a unique sound. Vivaldi was one of just a handful of composers who wrote six concertos for this instrument. That is what is on this disc. Just listen to the very first concerto and you can get an idea of the majesty and brilliance of all the music composed by this great master composer.

Whilst posting porn, and chatting with my VEF bros, I've had the excellent film Master and Commander: The Far side of the World playing in the background. There's a scene in the film where Capt. Jack delivers a Charles Darwinesque character to the Galapagos Islands, and a mesmerizing Cello tune is played. I had to look it up. Come to find out, it's entitled Prelude, and it's the prelude to.....

When I first started to buy classical music discs the industry was in its infancy. There were hundreds of record stores everywhere, and each one always had a classical music section, although it was always smaller than the other sections. Then as the disc industry grew ever more popular larger and larger stores were built and devoted entire floors to just classical music. When I first was buying Vivaldi music I would buy just a single disc of concertos for a single instrument. As my love for his music grew I started to buy whole sets of his music. The disc pictured is one for 5 of his cello concertos, but years later I acquired a box set containing 8 discs of all 28 of his cello concertos. This music is from my complete set of his cello concertos
