Rick, perhaps you overreacted.

I beg you to reconsider.

If my posts led you to feel insulted I gladly apologize. I never intended to insult you.
In the future I will refrain from showing my dislike of Microsoft.

Anyway do not do this for me, but at least respond to the others demands on this thread.

So today, earlier than planned because i found one in a sale, i got a windows 7 laptop or a safety net as it might be called. Now my old one is home premium this is pro. I've spent the afternoon adding the software i need on it. I've just run windows update for the first time. All the offending KB crapware is in optional on there where with one exception it was in important on the old one.

I did! I didn't appreciate over 6Gb of my disk space being used up by unsolicited software.

I'm not sure why Microsoft and it's apologists doesn't consider this as Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), which are normally classified as a potential security threat to any computer that the PUP is downloaded to. Then again, this is the same company that years ago introduced a whole class of threats to the Internet due to their design of Internet Explorer.

Remove unwanted Windows 10 upgrade files from Windows 7 and Windows 8.x

By Wayne Williams
Published 1 month ago

Microsoft has reportedly been downloading Windows 10 installation files on to computers running Windows 7 and 8.x, regardless of whether the users plan to upgrade to the new OS or not.

If you’re thinking of making the switch, and have requested an upgrade, that is fair enough. But if you’re more than happy to stick with your older OS for now, you might not be too happy about Microsoft cluttering up your hard drive with junk install files you don’t want. Fortunately, removing these files is easy enough.

Browse the root of your system drive, and you may find one or two sizable directories -- $Windows.~BT, and $Windows.~WS. These are hidden folders that contain the Windows install files (make sure Windows is set to show hidden files if the folders aren't visible). While you can just delete large folders, the best way to remove them and regain space is by using the built in Disk Cleanup tool.

Click Start and search for Disk Cleanup. Right-click the application that appears, and select Run as administrator. Select the drive you want to clean up -- this should be your system drive -- and click OK.

Click on Clean up system files, and select the drive again. In the list you’ll see Temporary Windows installation files. If this contains a sizable number of files, select it and click OK to remove the contents. This will clean out everything in the $Windows.~BT folder, but not in the $Windows.~WS directory (Disk Cleanup doesn’t target this particular folder at the moment). You can delete it manually though.

As for preventing the files being downloaded again, go to Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall or change a program. Click View installed updates on the left. Use the search box to locate the following updates: KB3035583, KB2952664, and KB3021917 (Windows 7) or KB3035583 and KB2976978 (Windows 8). Right-click each one and select Uninstall. When done, go to System and security in the Control Panel, and select Windows Update > Check for updates. Right-click each of the above updates in turn and select Hide update.

TIP: As a rule, if your system drive (the one that your Windows OS is running on) falls below 10% available free space, you'd better look to free up some space ASAP! I made such a mistake years ago. Basically the lack of disk space would not allow Windows to boot. I don't recall specifically what I did to escape this, but I do remember it was ugly. It's a mistake I have never repeated.

Mr Danger:

Thank you 4 fold.

In the old Main-Frame universe, the rule of thumb was to try and keep 20% or more of free disk space on all drives. I adhere to that.

Hi
My Windows 7 was working great for every appplication used. I cant really recall even having to deal with any issues.
Having chosen to download the free windows 10 upgrade, it now continually freezes, sticks and often has to be restarted by the only way of unpluging it from the mains??
It also now fails to start up a couple of times , and to be honest when it is working OK I cant see any advantage or anything better in it's use.
My PC performance as far as sticking, freezing , much slower to start etc and is now like I recall when I had Windows 98 on a computer, this was not the case when using Windows 7, which in my case was great.
I have all the usual anti virus, protection as would be expected so nothing has changed there.
So I am going back to Windows 7 now to regain the excellent performance I used to have which has been lost by upgrading to Window 10
This is just my experience I,m sharing wth you and trying to be helpful.
