Question What do you think of Tablets?

Electronic devices, not narcotics, of course -- I mean things like this:

Exactly what are these things good for?

I was given one, but can't figure out what to do with it

I have a Microsoft Surface RT, the first version, and I use it as a satellite to my main PC. I use it to show things like funny pictures to people who come around. Use it to watch sport streams on line. I've also used it to create documents while out and about.

I've had an iPad mini(why do the Americans always reverse words to sound silly?) for around 2 years and I got to grips with it fairly easily. My parents bought an iPad and it took months for them to get to know it. One VERY useful thing is the Facetime feature which allowed me to see my sister live in Las Vegas last year as she celebrated her 50th birthday with my parents out there too. It was 11.30pm here and early afternoon there but I was able to be part of it.

Downside is the battery. If not online via the pad you make it last up to 10 days or more but the more you are online or downloading Apps, the more the battery power is eaten up so it is wise to use it sparingly. The mini version can take over 4-5 hours to charge up and the larger version up to 7hrs but it lasts longer being bigger. The other drawback to the bigger iPad is weight-the older ones weigh a lot, whereas the new iPad Air 1 & 2 of both sorts are much lighter. iPad minis don't weigh so much though and can fit into a large-ish pocket. You can also download films, e-books, music etc through iTunes but you can also upload your own collections by plugging it into your main computer OR transferring from a cloud source.

Away from my desktop, I don't bother with being connected. I only turn my phone's internet connection on when I bored at work or I want to download an app or a game.

Just got an Android variety for my mom a week or so ago. I guess its OK. We got it because she needs some updated security and there's some new tech out which is called a Ring Door Bell. It is basically a door bell but also has a HD camera, microphone and speaker in it. It is supposed to allow my mother (who has difficulty getting to the door) to see who's at the door and also talk with them. When we're finished, she'll be able to open the door remotely from wherever she's at. And for all this to work, the device needs to connect to either an iPad or Android. So thats why we got the android (much cheaper). I've been playing with it a bit so, other than its size, I really don't see the point. Supposedly, it has a quad core processor but only a Gig or so in memory. Its nowhere near as fast as my dual core with 4 Gb of RAM. Still haven't figured out the Android email, it seems screwed up. Mom likes the book reading app OK except the cost of books seems pretty high (seems about the same as the paper variety). Don't think I'd buy one yet but if someone gave you one, what the heck, play with it. Maybe you'll like it.

More and more of the industry I'm in is going paperless. Often times it's really been convenient to be able to take a document, make a few edits, sign on the screen, and upload it and send copies via email. When previously we'd have to wait to get back to the offices, fax/email it over for signature. It's really cool when somebody has one of those.

Some of my musician hobbyist friends can load up pretty much all of their effects and stuff onto a iTablet and use it as if it were a full computer that costs much, much more.

Tablets?

I bought myself an Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. its good for ebooks, watching movies whereever you want - even classic movies .
As a workstation, really not my case, it's not easy to make some documents for my fingers just like on a cellphone.
The games for the mobile device hm, not my type of thing.
But you can go online nearly everywhere i have an extra slot for a cellphone GSMRcard, slow but even VEF runs really good on this android space versions.
so for me its an toy and entertainment system and not an alternative for a running windows/mac system PC.

Cheers.

Wink Ok I say restaurant really it`s always a McDonald`s , butt still

Hardly the biggest fan , although recently started keeping a couple packets in my purse.

As you'd not believe the number of women I've gone out with who came down with a crushing headache straight after I`d paid the restaurant`s bill
