England have a test match against West Indies coming up next Wednesday, to be played at Bridgetown, Barbados.

But when I looked a bit closer at the fixture list I was struck by a couple of things.
  1. Only three test matches in the series - it used to be five when visiting the West Indies.
  2. No less than eight one day internationals in the tour, two each at four venues, these being Barbados, Antigua, St Lucia and Grenada.
  3. Not one single game is to be played at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, at the Queens Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, nor at Georgetown, Guyana.

What's all that about?

People seem to want the shorter formats rather than the Test's, probably more to do with bums on seats.

I wonder as well whose bums will be on the seats. This tour is focused only on the Windward and Leeward Islands, classic holiday destinations. Guyana, Trinidad and Jamaica used to be popular holiday destinations but nowadays not quite so much. I fear that there will be few to none of the local people in the stadium supporting their team because the tickets will be going to British tourists at prices local people would not be able to pay. Greed and short termism will kill this game.

You can count the number of Test only players on one hand
who openly reject the shorter forms

Will Pucovski (Australia - age 20) to debut 2019- after just 8 matches at shield level

Just imagine if Australia in their golden period had picked a wicket keeper (Paine) & opening batsmen (Finch) on their T20/T50 form because neither were good enough to do it for their State at Sheffield Shield level

Test matches are just not practical nowadays, but I don't think it'll ever die. There'll be a minimal amount that'll eventually be settled on imo.

I might be in a minority these days, but I am looking forward to the Tests.

Nothing to do with ticket prices. There will be few locals in the grounds for ther test matches because that is the norm in the West Indies (and in fact everywhere except England, sometimes Australia and wherever England are touring).

Windies on the ropes, laughing at us on the floor. Looking like another first test in the series debacle.

Sods law dictates that eventually a collapse really means that. No lower order will save the day.

From 30-1 to 77 all out is pretty dour. Bad batting or good bowling ? The latter methinks.

Yet the consensus is that it all went pear-shaped the moment they selected the side. Sam Curran is a good cricketer but no main strike test bowler - even he would probably admit to that. And to be given that role may affect his subsequent performance.

Who would imagine Jennings being the top scorer ?

Vic ! What are the odds on England winning this one ?
