Magazine covers: eyes on stalks

Without much doubt, the covers of (North American)
Penthouse are what turned me into a porn collecting addict.


I had previously been wowed by the calendar appearances
of buxom Playboy Playmate Cynthia Myers, but Avril Lund
on the this cover was too much to resist. This issue was
instrumental in me becoming a lifelong fan of hairy pussies
and magnificent orbs. I was already a big fan of tan-lines
(thanks to Playmates like Paige Young, Ellen Michaels, Chris
Cranston, Cynthia Hall, Sharon Clark and Elaine Morton)


The advert left appeared in the National
Lampoon humour magazine. I was barely
able to contain my excitement when I
saw this issue down at the newsstand.
I had never seen a lady's bum on the
cover of a magazine and Sandi Greco's


nipples and pussy were mind-blowing.


This next cover was less provocative,
but barely hidden breasts and genitals
were very titillating. I was becoming a


convert to the Guccione esthetic with
all the lace, nylons, hats and chokers.

when Penthouse began to not only

March 1974 and, again, that marvelous
combination of tan-lines, tushies and
dark pubic hair shamelessly flaunted.


The British cover featured Marie Ekorre in a different
outfit and position, but still focused on her buttocks,
and this final spread is a masterpiece of suggestion.

The magazine cover which really got my attention was this cover of Swish from back in the early 80's.

If we're taking spanking magazines into account, I would put forward Spankers World No.2 as cover that I found impossible to resist:

I like the pose, I love the blue knickers, and I like the resigned expression of the model. It very effectively triggers fantasies of a world tailored to the desires of spankers!

In fact, Spankers World was not a recognised title, and the contents came as a disappointment to me. The publishers shrewdly used this enticing shot to sell an uninspiring bind-up of New Justice 3.2 and New Blushes 2.3. The cover girl does not appear in either and I've never seen any more of the set. The Blushes stable of spanking magazines was forever re-using photo-sets, however, so I live in hope of coming across it sometime.

It strikes me that my preferences are very constant: the favourite Men Only covers that I posted earlier in this thread all had essentially the same recipe: buttocks, face, eye-contact. Clearly, that's what does it for me.

I have that mag too. I also have the mag with that girl in it, and I think I also have that photo shoot in digital form. It may take me a while to find it! When I do, I will post in a suitable place here and let you know.

I bought this from a newsagents near my 6th Form when skipping 'games' one Wednesday afternoon in 1975. It caught my eye even before I'd scanned the top shelf.

It had the worst faults of a typical mid-70s Fiesta cover: cheap-looking, badly designed, a mediocre model.

So why did it have my eyes out on stalks? Because despite the faults, whoever had put that cover together had managed to get a striptease onto the cover in just three poses and it ended with a full standing pose of the girl showing off her bare arse.

As was common back then the girl on the cover wasn't in the magazine as I remember and ripchord's post here confirms.

The girls in the sets inside the magazine were better looking, more stylishly posed and photographed, and there was the moderate but exciting enough level of explicitness usual in Russell Gay publications back then - ie, plump fannies on show, flaps often visible but not open, bumhole sometimes visible but not foregrounded - but I can't remember a single one of them.

Instead it was that clumsy striptease cover that persuaded me to buy and kept me exercising my wrist over the following days.

As you say, it looks like something they threw together at half-past-four on Friday when the whole office just wanted to go home, and she's not the hottest girl in the world- (although for me, she does have something about her- I'd have been disappointed to find she wasn't in the mag itself- it always annoyed me when they did that), but I totally get why that cover caught your eye back then- I love seeing a woman stripping down from fully-clothed to naked, and capturing that so well in just 3 pics is actually quite a nice bit of work by whoever designed Fiesta's covers at the time.

Another cover that caught my eye back in my 6th form days was the August '84 issue of Playboy- I mentioned this a couple of weeks back in the 'the first mag you ever wanked to' thread, as it was my first ever encounter with the Bunny mag. Playboy's Miss August was the gorgeous Suzi Schott...



...but the interesting thing for me is that she's not the covergirl, so as much (and as often) as I've enjoyed Suzi's set, she wasn't the reason I reached up to the top shelf for my first ever Playboy, instead of one of my more usual mag choices. Instead, it featured one of Playboy's celebrity scoops, 1940's/50's Hollywood actress Terry Moore who became the oldest woman to pose for the mag, baring (almost) all at the age of 55.

OK, I always had an eye for the appeal of an older woman, but there was something about the cover, with the combination of 'then and not' pics of Terry Moore, that caught my eye- I certainly wasn't aware of her movie career (although IIRC even in the UK there had been some newspaper stories about her Playboy appearance), so it could only have been that cover shot that made me think I really needed to buy that mag and to see her naked.



The set didn't disappoint either- OK, a little soft-focus in deference to her years, but Playboy's photographer served Terry really well- a really lovely set of pics and I had some very good times with them

My plan was to buy a couple that day, and use them for a few years and not have to buy any more!

About 200 mags later, that was obviously a very naive plan
