missing the last part of an archive? try to finish it with a torrent
Not sure if anyone appreciates this guide...
Sometimes when you download a multi-part archive (say, a whole movie rip) a link for one of the parts expired. You end up with the first part. In some cases it's easy to find another upload, but what if you're after a rare movie? Let's assume you've found it on a torrent that's barely alive. I'd like to share a trick that may save you downloading time. I used WinRAR and Vuze (Azureus) in my example. For experienced computer users. * First you need to find a torrent of this movie, but the exact file sizes (in bytes) must match. Of course CRC should too, but you'll rarely be able to compare that. If there's at least one seeder, there's a chance. * Start unpacking the archive somewhere. When the archiver asks for the part that's missing, Alt-Tab to Explorer/file manager and copy the file that's being extracted (A) somewhere else (B). Cancel extraction - (A) disappears. * Start downloading the torrent. Stop it after the file (C) is created on your disk by bittorrent client. * Copy the aborted extracted file (B) onto barely started torrent download (C), overwriting. Tell the bittorrent client to force check the torrent again. If the files indeed had matching CRC, you only need to download the missing portion of the archive. If it's successful, delete (B) and parts of archive, since (C) is what you need. |
