Star Trek: Into Darkness – Review Writer and producer J.J. Abrams beams us back aboard his version of the USS Enterprise for this second entry in the “rebooted” Star Trek universe which he showed off in the 2009 self-titled film. And it was a universe that many fans of the original series (and future new series) like me found to be a bit of a shock. But, it was an enjoyable film and even before it started playing in theaters, Paramount green-lit this sequel. But for many, again myself included, wondered why it took four years to make this. It would seem that when you are given the go ahead for a sequel, you strike while the iron is hot and get started on it right away. So, does the 4 year layoff hurt or help this new entry into the Star Trek universe? Well, it’s a little of both. On the help side, it does reunite the cast from the first film. Chris Pine as Kirk, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty and Zachary Quinto as the most perfect choice for Spock since Leonard Nimoy was cast in the original series. On the hurt side, you would think that with four years between the films coming out, it would allow the writers to come up with an original story set in this universe. Instead, the story is an almost redux of one of the better earlier film entries. I’ll leave you to guess which one as I don’t reveal spoilers in my reviews. The story takes place one year after the events of the first film where Kirk and crew are observing a planet with a newly discovered race. But a volcano on that world is about to blow, so in direct violation of Starfleet’s “Prime Directive” (hard core fans will know what that means) Kirk and Bones get the natives to flee a temple at the base of the volcano while Spock makes a decent into the crater to set off a “cold fusion” bomb that will kill the eruption. Of course things don’t go exactly to plan and the natives see the Enterprise rise from the planet’s ocean. Upon their return home, Kirk is called on the carpet by his mentor Admiral Pike (Bruce Greenwood) for his actions and is relieved of command. He’s given a second chance when a rogue Starfleet officer attacks a conference of ship’s captains at headquarters and Pike is killed. This second chance is filled with danger as the rogue Starfleet officer has fled to the Klingon planet of Kronos. The admiral in charge of Starfleet also sends along some new photon torpedoes that can be fired from a safe distance from the planet without violating the neutral zone between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. But, they are revealed to hold a bigger secret than just new weapons technology. However, instead of using the new torpedoes to destroy where the rogue Starfleet officer is hiding, Kirk decides to go to Kronos and capture him. This is successful, but reveals who this figure really is and what his motives are. What follows is the near destruction of the Enterprise; the near death of one of the main characters and what happens when a starship crashes into a major city. In this case it’s San Francisco of the 23rd century. So what do I think of the film? While not the most original story that could have been set in this “new” Star Trek universe, it does have its moments. Especially the witty banter that takes place between Kirk, Spock, and the other main crew. Great performances are delivered by all the cast and in my opinion Zachary Quinto (Spock) and British actor Benedict Cumberbatch as the “rogue” Starfleet officer are standouts. It also leaves the question of will there be a third entry into the series and will J.J. Abrams be behind it. He is slated after all to be producing/directing the next film in the Star Wars saga, Episode VII, hitting screens in 2015. Only time and solid box office numbers will tell. My grade – “B+” Star Trek: Into Darkness – Paramount Pictures (2013) Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence Running Time 132 Minutes

Heavenly Creatures (1994)
Heavenly Creatures (1994) "Two girls have an intense fantasy life; their parents, concerned the fantasy is too intense, separate them, and the girls take revenge." Starring Melanie Lynskey Kate Winslet (Kate's first film) Dreamlike, intense and somewhat disturbing. I found this film completely absorbing. ------ Spoiler Base on a true story. I should know better but ......
Birdemic 2: The Resurrection (2013) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1674047/ A sequel to one of the worst movies ever as our pisspoor CGI feathered fiends attack a bunch of wannabe movie makers. Everything about this is bad, acting, direction, boom microphone visible, editing but it is oddly watchable if only to see where the next cartoon threat is coming from, even from jellyfish then preserved prehysteric birds of prey |
