Which came from people over-generalizing from a Playboy interview Dern gave promoting the movie, in which he said audiences would see (this is from memory, so it may not be exact, but it's close enough) "a whole relationship, from beginning through consummation, on-camera."

People took that to mean they actually had sex, and various media outlets ran with that because it made for lurid stories, but he's clearly talking about the characters. Adams was furious that Dern wouldn't deny it, and she did.
