Default Actor Tim Pigott-Smith dies aged 70

British actor Tim Pigott-Smith, who was best known for his Bafta-winning role in 1984 TV series The Jewel in the Crown, has died aged 70. His agent described him as "one of the greatest actors of his generation". The actor was due to appear in a touring production of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, with opening night in Northampton on Monday. He received Olivier and Tony Award nominations in 2014/15 for his lead role in the play King Charles III. He was also made an OBE in the 2017 New Year Honours list for his services to drama.

"It is with deep regret that I have to announce the sad news that Tim Pigott-Smith died this morning," his agent John Grant said. "Much-loved and admired by his peers, he will be remembered by many as a gentleman and a true friend. He will be much missed. We ask that you respect the privacy of his wife, the actress Pamela Miles, his son Tom and the family." Pigott-Smith was originally meant to appear as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman opposite Miles. However she pulled out of the production earlier this week when she broke a bone during rehearsals and needed surgery. The play was due to tour in Cambridge, Exeter and Oxford until July.

Born in Rugby, Warwickshire, Pigott-Smith trained as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He appeared in numerous Shakespearean stage productions before his big break in ITV's The Jewel in the Crown, about the final days of the British Raj in India. Starring as police superintendent Ronald Merrick, his performance saw him beat co-stars Charles Dance and Art Malik to win a best actor Bafta in 1985.

In a diverse career, his other TV credits include roles in The Vice, Bloody Sunday, Downton Abbey and Doctor Who. On the big screen he notably appeared in Clash of the Titans, V for Vendetta and James Bond film Quantum of Solace. According to IMDB, the actor was also currently working on a TV film version of King Charles III, which imagines Prince Charles's succession to throne following the death of the Queen.

Great in Scorsese 's Casino.
Strange that feeling you get with rare people , when you believe you have always known them.
Don was one of them.

Don Rickles is certainly another one. I've always dreaded this day and wasn't quite sure how I would react when I heard Mr. Rickles had passed. I was at work when a co-worker told me. I had sort of been afraid that if I did hear of his passing at work I might actually start to cry. When I was told the feeling of devastation was actually no more than a split second. A little gasp I had was quickly replaced by a smile because I started to remember the thousands and thousands of times Mr. Rickles had made me laugh over my lifetime.

I'm 51 years old now so when Mr. Rickles was doing his thing on Johnny Carson and the Dean Martin Roasts I was probably about 10 years old or less. When I was little my mom and dad fought like cats and dogs. They both drank and an explosion could happen over the smallest thing. One of the few times they were civil with each other was during those Dean Martin Roasts or if Mr. Rickles was on The Tonight Show. I can almost hear my dad's laugh right now whenever Mr. Rickles would jab somebody real good.

As I got older I never lost my love for Mr. Rickles. That was helped along by all of his appearances with David Letterman. Since I watched just about every David Letterman show since he started in 1982 I saw all of Mr. Rickles appearances. Dave's reverence for Mr. Rickles was clearly apparent. He would just let Don go and play the straight man and the result was very funny. There's no telling how many times I've watched all of those Youtube clips of Dave with Mr. Rickles.

To say I loved Mr. Rickles is probably an understatement. It almost borders on worship. He was my favorite comic of all times. I will miss him. But I will spend a lot of time over the next few days watching a ton of Youtube clips of him and I can guarantee that each clip I see will make me laugh just as hard as when I saw them when they originally aired on tv so many years ago.

R.I.P. Mr. Warmth
I read about this too.

Apparently, he also did the voice for Mr Potato Head in the Toy Story movies, which is where I think of him the most.

It says that he appeared in Clash of the Titans. Can I ask, what character did he play? I've seen both films (both old and new) loads of times, but can't quite place his face in it?

He played Thallo. Below is an extract from the synopsis.

"Perseus befriends Thallo (Tim Pigott-Smith) and presents himself as suitor and correctly answers the riddle, presenting the severed hand of Calibos. Perseus wins Andromeda's hand in marriage. Finding that Thetis cannot act against Perseus, Calibos instead demands that she take vengeance on Joppa. At the wedding, Queen Cassiopeia compares Andromeda's beauty to that of Thetis herself, whereupon Thetis demands Andromeda be sacrificed to the Kraken on pain of Joppa's destruction."
