Thumbs up Films you like that others loathe

Bugger up a rope , i wrote this (Well not this one the other one) thread intro late last night (In between that brief period i was chronically depressed and almost cheery ) as i had several dozen films that i pretty much love yet which were not only box office poison but are also shunned by more or less everyone i know . Only just before posting it and while making my rounds i discover fellow member Rfan hath started one sorta kinda similar

Hi , just got back from the bathroom (Have made sure the bath`s water is piping hot and that i've got a nice clean razor blade waiting in the telly tubby soap dish)

Meaning i`m in a conundrum , as it`s a big enough effort (For me) writing without realizing i wasted my time doing so

Aaaaah but technically have i ?, as technically these two threads could be viewed as a whimsy dissimilar . In wording if nothing else , hmmm even in context some might say (Namely me)

Hell if we can have two about what drink you prefer etc then i`m sure this can be shoe horned into discussion

Although if anybody disagrees please contact me direct and if i get three nay`s i`ll wipe this one out with extreme prejudice

Only kidding

I`m not going to wipe this baby , especially as of this date i've deleted 60+ of my own threads (To add with site space saving ) and flipping countless posts that i considered now redundant.

So me sacrifice my new born ???

" Please ye Gods Nooooooooooooo !"

-------------------------------------------------------------

This thread concerns those films you`re not embarrassed about liking , the ones that everybody else regards as

Yet you have embraced as if they were

Ok so i exaggerate to clarify , but in my defense they are both set in the desert

Still you know the films i`m talking about , i mean the ones ALL the reviewers hated and that ALL the cinema going public turned it`s collective back on. The one`s that flopped so badly they broke entire production companies , or at the very least put back the careers of all involved by a few years !

So if you've got a film you like that general opinion loathes then stick it here , and when i say like i`m saying films you actually LIKE as in have seen more than once !.Only please give at least a few sentences alongside it`s name explaining just why you like it .Also it`d be great if you could include a youtube trailer where possible . Because who knows you may attract a few converts (One of the reasons i started this new thread) , and even help reverse it's current low standing (The second reason)

Anyway here`s my first and it`s

Now it died a death at the box office and didn't do much better in video or DVD sales , plus the vast majority of reviewers ripped it and Carpenter apart for even existing.

Yet i love this film

Alright no film is ever perfect that`s taken for granted , and sure this speedy epic has it`s flaws and plot holes and lets be honest utter mistakes (For one thing they totally underused Heston and Julie Carmen )

So why do i adore it so much as to make me see it five times now ?

Ok for one thing i find the story original and fully identify with John Trent experiences and reactions as the world around him unravels , as that`s how i behave on a daily basis as well

For another i have a similar temperament to Sutter Cane , not due to me being an ego freak or anything but as i enjoy trying to force myself to somehow write words while the gateway to hell slowly forms itself behind me.Hah i love this film due to it`s excellent beginning , superb middle and quite frankly facking outstanding negative ending

What other reasons do you need ?

I'm with you on that film - I enjoyed it too.

I just thought of one that every human I know thought was utter monkey shite apart from me...one mate even said I deserved to be tortured in similar ways to those in the film for liking it!!

"The name of the Rose"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091605/

Granted - a monk detective sounds complete arse..I give you Cadfael but there is something about this movie which hooked me line and sinker.

I haven't a clue what that is but I know I can watch this film every couple of months or so and not get bored of it...

Regards

Default What Dreams May Come

Every single review I have read of this has been scathing. Including those on Greenskulls "Worst Movies" thread .. (well Of course they'd be), but every other review also, aside from those on the inside cover.
Whilst I didn't enjoy it enough to buy a copy, I put a lot of time into copying it, and have watched it several times.
It's actually a pretty good 'first date movie', as it's a story above "love" beyond the grave and into the afterlife.
In fact the first time I saw it was on the big screen at the cinema on my first date with a beautiful girl.
I'm not ashamed to say I cried.
This was probably due to the fact that her boyfriend was waiting back at her place.
However this film is fairly engrossing, well shot, and well produced with a myriad of (especially for the time) cutting edge special effects, and has a timeless quality.
It's well worth having a copy when you wanna get ya leg over some sensitive female.

I'm sure it was a huge box office success, (Edit: It wasn't -cost 85 mil and grossed 71 mil), although no man will admit to liking it! As far as the plot, having both your lead characters die fairly early, leaves a lot of possibilities open. In short, he goes to heaven, she goes to hell, and its his mission to reunite.

I used to be a Sensitive New Age Guy, now I'm a Caring Understanding New Type.

Great thread idea! This is a film that, as far as I know, only Roger Ebert and I like. It's called "Wiseguys" and it stars Danny DeVito and Joe Piscapo (that's right). It was directed by Brian DePalma and it's a comedy (that's right). It's a send-up of the Martin Scorsese mob movies. It features Harvey Keitel in a supporting role as a character named Bobby D. (that's right). It even features Scorsese's parents doing one of those walk-ons that they would do in Marty's movies. I think the movie is hilarious and all of my friends think it sucks. I can't find anyone who even likes this movie, let alone loves it as much as I do.

Thumbs up Club Dread

It made less than a pocketful of change at the cinemas and was voted as completely rotten by those in the know , yet it`s one of my favourite films. Now i don`t know what that exactly says about me ?, but then who cares. As i got the unrated version a few years ago for the ridiculous bargain basement sum of three pounds (Not that that`s the reason i like it ) and have seen the entire thing roughly six times , and certain scenes a few dozen !

See i like it for a number of reasons , here`s nine of them

1) It`s just so out and out stupid that even the many many gruesome murders soon become funny
2) Brittany Daniel wears very little throughout
3) The cast gel so well together it`s a pleasure to watch them , which i guess isn`t surprising as they`re mostly formed from the comedy group Broken Lizard

4) Bill Paxton IS coconut Pete

5) Putman with his Dick Van Dyke English accent
6) An idiotic killer , who it turns out is butchering everybody for the most pointless of reasons
7) Great songs

8) Brittany Daniel wears very little throughout , said that already only it's worth repeating
9) Brilliant ending , or is it ???

A few of the songs

Paradise Island

Pina Coladaburg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DO3T4iVEkqA

Naughty Cal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsO0fleCyps&NR=1

Comin' Blowin'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpZzZ...eature=related

Be warned this trailer is poor and contains the weakest jokes in the whole film , but then i think the production company lost faith in it a few months before release

Default Shock 'em Dead

I'm sure this movie went straight to Video, so it may not qualify?
Features Traci L@rds in a straight (non-nude) role, a cast of unknowns, Michael Angelo Batio guitar close ups, babes and some nice boobage. (See the opening trailer below)

It's B-movie schlock horror (comedy?) with some half decent rock songs, a couple of 'naff ones,
guitar pyrotechniques, multiple neck guitars, evil predators and a little projectile vomiting.
From memory the Videocassette spine had "Rock 'em Dead" printed on it, so they probably didn't really know what to call it.. Pretty brainless gratuity really, but hey, what are we doing here?
You'd probably only want to watch it once every ten years or so, unless your under twenty.
the trailer

a sample of the music. This is when 'Angel' the Guitarist 'drops' the singer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nWzx...eature=related - one of the poorer songs, but kinda funny.

If it bombed
Most people hate it
But you like it

Then it qualifies

Probably almost my entire film collection but here's some highlights that I watch every now and again as they cheer me up.

Nightbeast - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086013/
The Creeps- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129852/
Head of The Family - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116503/
Fleshtone - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109810/
Tower of Evil - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068716/
Scared to Death (aka Syngenor) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081457/
Leprechaun 3 - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113636/

and there's plenty more where they came from.

Diving in to thread, well, tripping and stumbling head first is more accurate, I'm going to wave a little flag for Hudson Hawk. The biggest problem with defending Hawk of course, is that there is simply so much that you can loathe about the film. But I don't care. It's far easier to take a film, particularly this film and jump onto the heaving bandwagon of what makes it so bad than it is to try and say what's actually good about it.

So Bruce Willis is smug and ridiculously overconfident? Hmmm, this is the same Bruce Willis who was only a couple of years prior to the movie being lauded and praised for acting in the very same style in Moonlighting is it not? It's only been in hindsight that he has turned out to be one of the more interesting and versatile actors to come out of the Hollywood Sausage Factory in recent years. The guy plays virtually the same character on the screen that he'd been playing successfully on TV and that's a bad thing? Meh.

The plot is ridiculous? No more ridiculous than any other big screen popcorn blockbuster imo. In fact I'd suggest that the basic storyline is pretty good: Leonardo Da Vinci creates a machine to make gold out of lead and a couple of hundred years on half a dozen assorted misfits and lunatics all decide to steal it, using a newly released cat burglar to get it. It's no more outlandish than a lot of the other big summer hits of the same time. Independence day, aliens defeated by Windows 95 anyone?

The actors aren't taking it seriously. No, they aren't. They're having a blast all the way through. Richard E Grant is hamming it up in a way that he isn't usually allowed to, Bruce Willis is being Bruce Willis. Hell even David Caruso gets to put in a silent showing, back in the days before he became Saint Horatio of Caine.

I think the main reason a lot of people dislike the film (aside from the fact that it's crap, there I got that one in before anyone else did) is that it isn't a "comfortable" film to watch. It doesn't follow the same rules and regs that Big Star Blockbusters are supposed to follow. "What's my motivation in this film" says Willis. "You want a cappucino and everyone keeps stopping you from getting one" says the director. "Ok...." says Willis, then goes off to ham it up like a goodun. Even Andie McDowell isn't unwatchable, surely that must be some kind of redeeming quality

So yeah. Next time Hudson Hawk is on, if there's nothing else worth watching (I'd hate it to clash with an episode of "the mental deterioration of Susan Boyle" for example) turn your preconceptions in at the door and sit down for what is essentially a silly, ludicrous, self indulgent and yet ultimately quite fun film. And even if you don't enjoy it by the time the credits roll, I guarantee you'll be whistling "Swing on a Star" for a few days to come
