Having many friends from that part of the world, Russians from the former Baltic States most left because of some discomfort living in those countries and for economic reasons.
Most would like to return to the motherland so to speak if they could and they all still feel a deep sense of patriotism although a couple are really blind followers of Putin most were not really happy with him on domestic issues they are behind him on the issues of eastern Ukraine. And having numerous Polish friends there is a whole range of opinions. A few do dislike Russia but the vast majority are either neutral and some do see Russia as a fellow Slavic nation though they all dislike Putin many are fearful of the EU and NATO and neither positive towards America. As you know the history between the two is rather fractious ie the sacking of Moscow, the Kosziuszko uprising, Katyn etc but they hope for better relations. A small minority are real Russophiles namely the older ones and they can also speak Russian too. Most lament some of the social changes with reference to social care systems and also the huge amounts of endemic corruption. They also dislike Donald Tusk who they see as an American stooge. |

The break-up of USSR and Eastern Bloc brought unimaginable change. Some changes were good, but many brought diabolical disruption -- anyone who lived in Yeltsin's Russia knows what I mean
On the positive side, more freedom is good, more availability of consumer goods is greatly appreciated especially of labor-saving devices & autos (if you can afford them), also of basic things like building materials On the negative side, some Republics experienced civil wars and dictatorships, and still do. Also interference from alien powers. See Central Asia & Caucasus for examples (let's not mention Ukraine) On the in-between side, I agree with laws limiting freedom of speech. It's good to allow criticism of politicians, but I'm glad the disgraceful Pussy Rot went to prison. I'm also glad homosexuals can't advertize in the presence of minors. But I know some who disagree |

hehehe!
A lot of this consumption stuff is real trash, hard to disagree. But I don't have an answer. Unless we find a way to forbid it. I heard the Chinese moved all McJunk joints to backstreets. Maybe they're better at managing this |

About the Moscow McDonald's thing:
"Those people stood in line to get into a McDonald's, but we [Americans] wouldn't stand in line to burn one down..." -- attributed to a Libertarian Party candidate for Congress |
