You are right, NIN. The former thread vanished mysteriously, but I didn't want to change my signature. So I created a new one.

Does anyone else use the thanks button to track what posts you've read or downloaded the links /pictures from ?

I only have one simple rule - if someone has posted yet never thanks anyone I don't thank them.

Members are multiply encouraged by Forum Rules, there is no need to beg for thanks:

Things to take in account:
  • don't forget to the posters - without them there would be no posts and no VEF

Posting guideline:

Using the 'Thanks' button: thank the posters when you see something you appreciate - without their work there would be no VEF. But don't use short replies to say thanks for a post. Thank a poster by clicking on the 'Thanks' button on the right-bottom corner of the post you want to thank:

Make it a habit to hit that button. For many posters, receiving no thanks or very few compared to the number of downloads, is a reason to stop contributing

Hmm.. I wonder if the rules are much help in this regard. I have a file in the classic registered movie section that have been downloaded over 1000 times.. and 66 thanks to match. Maybe that is what one is supposed to expect? I don't care much though. That is not what keeps me posting. But I'm a bit surprised that signed up members have such bad table manners!

Agreed,
But if i post something like this " congratulations on your first post, looking forward to many more and don't forget the thanks button "
it is not meant in anyway as begging for thanks.
I'm not asking the poster to thank my posts, just encouraging a new poster and a little forum etiquette.

Looking at it written down and reading it in this thread i can see that the thanks button bit could be read in a different way to the way i intended it. So maybe i should drop that bit.

As i said before i believe that if i hadn't received the encouragement i got at the beginning ( i mean through other members talking to me not from the thanks button) i might not have become so involved and i now think i should do the same for the new members/posters.

Anyway i've gone somewhat off topic here so i'll shut up.

That's pretty much how I use it. If I've downloaded the pics/file the "thanks" button is hit. It helps me track where I've been. Much less so within discussions. It usually only gets hit when I either agree strongly with the poster's statement/opinion or they've made me laugh like a drain or sometimes during a chain of events/talk/help I've gotten involved in.

I give when I like or download something, I get when post stuff. It's all a vicious cycle...
