I suppose your restrictive gun laws have mostly killed the domestic market. Do they still make those giant double-barreled rifles made for African safaris? I would expect a wonky rich aristocrat who wants to go off to Africa and shoot an elephant would have no trouble cutting through the red tape meant to keep guns out of the hands of commoners.

For longer range,a flatter trajectory, less wind deflection-And that heavy bullet will blow the bastards chest out,A confirmed kill for sure. The British Army traditionally used rifle calibre machine guns.Killing Elephants for sport is a no no,So no one needs an Elephant gun,They did come in handy on the Western front in WW1,They could penetrate a German sniper's steel shield and the Snipers head..

I forgot to ask the question. No pic of the weapon set up in the article. Can't find it online. The pics I could find online were obviously not set up for 1 mile plus shots.

Anyone find a pic of it?

FWIW-as someone who has considerable past experience with that weapon-it is not surprising-even on auto we would engage out to 2400-2500 metres. What is surprising with this incident is if they did this from a pintle mount-as shown in the above link.

An M2 .50HB on a tripod mount is an extremely accurate weapon-and at full elevation will reach out 7400 metres-making it quite useful for interdicting things like road junctions or narrow defiles, regular supply routes etc. you won't do much to an AFV-even a light one-at that range-but you can make life a misery for soft skinned transport....

On the tripod-the M2 can be fired single shot-effectively making it an alternative to a Barrett-using what we call the 'bolt latch' which permits the action to fire a single shot without repeating. Couple this to the accurate elevation and traverse settings possible on a tripod and you can (assuming you have the time and opportunity) dial the weapon in on a target with virtual pinpoint accuracy-providing you can see the initial fall of shot and adjust from there....

A pintle mount though-which is what I'd expect to find on an SAS vehicle is fully flexible-cannot be so adjusted-so it was purely first class gunnery skills on the part of the firer-and his observer-that resulted in this reported kill.

Hathcock used an 8x Unertl scope with a field mod mount on his 50 cal Browning MaDeuce for his long shot. Those pics in the article just show at most a normal four power optic on those pintle mounted M2's.

If they ever publicized the "special sight" that was fitted on it, sales would go quite high.

I suspect the SAS will keep quite quiet about the actual technical details-it helps keep the edge....and keeps the opposition wondering...

Just to put a little more perspective on things-the Barrett 50 has a barrel length of 25-29" (depending on configuration)-the M2 Browning HB has a barrel length of 45".....so when properly mounted on a tripod (and well bedded in) I would expect it to be capable of equaling-and quite probably exceeding-the accuracy of a Barrett when operated on single shot by someone who knew what they were doing. In this reported kill instance the main variable would be how stable the pintle mount was-and whether it had any kind of buffer and recoil dampening mechanism built in (the ones I used to use in my unit didn't)-we can safely assume-given the trade of the operators-that the weapon and sight were properly set up and carefully adjusted. In any case the report didn't mention what mount was used-it is not beyond possibility that the weapon WAS set up on a tripod on the vehicle for this particular operation-though that would not be a normal mode of operation as the tripod has quite a large footprint-and SAS vehicles normally use multiple MGs on flexible mountings-which are normally a pintle type-though they may well carry tripods with them for dismounted deployment of the gun(s) should the situation arise...
