band of brothers is the best in my opinion (Spielberg & hanks are doing another one called The Pacific that comes out this year)

More British troops probably died in the American made Sherman tank than in their own. The Sherman was fueled by gasoline instead of diesel, and was too thinly armored to provide adequate defense against German anti-tank weapons, esp. the fearsome 88mm. There was a rather good 1943 war propaganda film called Sahara, in which Humphrey Bogart commanded a Sherman sent to Libya for desert trials, rounded up British and Allied stragglers left behind in a German snap offensive and organised the successful defence of an oasis to stop Africa Korps troops from outflanking British lines.

Except for the excellent Russian T34, which won the land war on the Eastern Front, the Sherman was the best tank generally available to the Allies. It was difficult to repair in the field because the mechanical design was stupid and I personally would have chosen death by firing squad rather than obey an order to drive one into battle against Tiger tanks: if the gun was pointing anywhere but straight ahead, the turret blocked the driver's hatch and he could not get out. Dear God! I wouldn't kill my worst enemy like that.
