Rumour has it that Rooney will line up along side Southgate to answer questions on how he feels about being left out. Southgate was quoted as saying Shrek still has a future with England and would continue to play for his country with pride.
The amount of people within the footballing world who have condemned the booing of our captain would show that he has the support of his peers. So it would be fair to say retirement is still post 2018 World Cup Finals. |

As I have said before, love him or hate him we cannot deny his achievements for his country. The problem for him, like Beckham to use his name again, is that they count for nothing when people remember you for playing after your best. For all the good he did people remember Beckham for being sent off, jumping the tackle at WC 2002 and getting more caps than he should have. Rooney's record will stand but in 20 years people will, in my opinion, remember him going missing at big tournaments and playing badly whilst winding down his England career.

Its a tough group that one. France, Holland and Sweden all fighting it out to finish top and qualify automatically. No one really wants to finish second because you never know who you will get in the play offs. It also means one of the three won't make it at all and that is a loss to the competition. Not necessarily in terms of the football but all 3 have very vocal and enthusiastic fans which would be missed. I think many neutrals are hoping on the fan basis that Iceland also get there. They had one of the best set of fans at the Euros.
Good luck to the French tonight as it will be a tough game. Holland are not the side they were but they can still beat anyone on their day. A massive game tonight that will inch one team a little closer to the WC. |

I see Benteke has scored quickest-ever goal in a World Cup qualifier after just 6 or 7 seconds depending on the news report.

I agree. When it comes to judging someone on their international standing its based solely on finals. Friendlies and qualifying to me do not count as often its against poor sides. In finals you often come up against the best of the worst and of course the best of the best. That to me is where players are weighed and measured against their peers. Rooney, like the majority of the England side since 1990 or maybe 96, fall down at that point. When they should be shining they vanish and melt into the background. Brazilian Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Pirlo and others are viewed as successful because they performed on the biggest stage. Even if they had not won the WC, they would still be viewed as great because they delivered the goods when it counted.
Rooney may have the stats to say this or that but as you say he is well down the list of best England players. I suspect he would struggle to be in the top 20 on actual tournament play. |

Allardyce, played one, won one, 100% winning record.
Southgate, played one, won one, 100% winning record. In future the FA should appoint managers for just one game. I thought playing shit was a requirement for England captains. Bring back Wayne. |
