Conduct on the Forums
Theres an old saying that every topic has 2 sides ALAS some dont seem to agree with this view so its all black & white. This never makes a great platform for a respectful debate
I could list a dozen such recent topics where the interested parties have presented their black and white views and what ensued was nothing short of a schoolyard name calling fest YOU ATTACK THE ARGUMENT/FACTS not the INDIVIDUAL I believe they call this DEBATING Sometimes even after you've presented your view which is factually correct you still wont win. This is the curse of the internet. No one has to bow to your opinion On topics that call for a subjective view AGREE to DISAGREE and MOVE ON unless you enjoy banging your head against that brickwall |

Contentious issues such as politics or personal belief systems etc are by their very nature devoid of grey areas, otherwise those that held certain opinions wouldn`t bother to do so as the ease of being swayed would negate the original effort . Such issue threads also have no real place on this forum i suppose ,and i think have lately been started merely as ticking time bombs. I myself have stupidly added my own reasonable views on such threads until sense and the futility has dawned , although i always refrained from the school yard tactics you mention (Against other members) as it achieves nothing and those that use the method show themselves up quite vividly. Still i hope school yard tactics doesn`t include the use of gentle sarcasm as hey i built my entire life around it , but don`t blame me blame my parents for forcing me to watch the Golden Girls on CH4 during the late eighties during those oh so impressionable formative years !.

The only thing I'd say about sarcasm over the internet is its not always apparent to everyone reading.
The internet brings together people from differing backgrounds, education levels, languages, ages & cultures so we should be more mindful of each other when conversing but instead because of the anonymity of the internet we seem to be more emboldened.I suspect more than few are under the weather when posting views Its the total opposite to how the majority would converse with strangers in real life |

More emboldened to pass rush judgements on those we know nothing about maybe , but me i`m exactly the same here as i am out there and i get the inkling you are as well. Which in my case means i`m happy go lucky unless i find need to be plucky . Also "Gentle " sarcasm is a necessity to exist in either this realm or flesh world i believe, especially to be "Gently " sarcastic to oneself. As it helps prevent the illness of taking yourself too seriously. Plus it keeps you grounded and cheery in face of draconian mentalities and cowardly wannabe bullies ,wherever they may dwell. And although i get your sentiment in my own opinion i think the Internet doesn`t bring people together as such ,it opens the floodgates to unchecked spiteful creators of chaos . It allows a certain type of person to find a level of volume they couldn`t get elsewhere, a volume to toss their festering insults between others of their ilk in the name of personal expression. Thankfully such entities are in the minority, easy to spot and laugh up our sleeves at . Also aren`t we all under the weather as a matter of source ?, orbital astronauts excluded of course

True the internet does allow for the ugly side of human behaviour because there isnt any
penalty. The internet is so vast being banned is water of a ducks back.Hide your IP address and run amok pretty much.I've heard stories of Troll forums whose only purpose is to select other forums to attack enmass...their not that easy to spot as they once were I'm not saying every person who just doesnt get your view even after everyone else has is looking to wind you up but i dont under estimate the possibility Had someone tell me a few months ago that all misconceptions/extreme views needed to be confronted as the internet was the new battleground for the hearts & minds of people. Far too serious a view for mine.I've never seen a left leaning diehard persuade a right leaning nationalist over to their cause.I've watched these types batter each other senseless on a few forums and the outcome is always the same...total exasperation...utterly pointless but each to their own The more I've delved into who I'm talking with online the more I've come to realise its a fools game trying the change peoples views immediately. All you can do is put forward factual information and let them decide is validity. All too often it seems people even when confronted with unassailable arguments still choose to disagree because it doesnt reinforce their long held views I think current circumstances dictate largely how people choose to act online So if you have a Professor and a long term unemployed unskilled white male from an OECD country debating migration I'd suggest calling in the United Nations Peace Keeping Force before the talks begin Actually the worst weather actually comes from the Idiot box in my experience Skyhooks werent far off when they wrote Horror Movie to describe the News they only replay it like 6/7 times a day I'd sooner stand out in a category 5 hurricane than watch the news I'm almost certain my state of mind would be worse after the news Last edited by buttsie; February 14th, 2009 at 08:07 PM.. |

Yes but a little poke at the other party is always a good thing, especially when they take it much harder then anyone should have taken it. LOL I think first before -- some . Well anyone -- 204 Argumentative Writing would help some. BTW snaps on the topic, dont get all worked up. Short story. When I was Administering one of the largest places of this kind, one of the newer mods was having a fight in a topic (this was not the first time). Long story short, I had to remind him that once he got into such a discussion he was no longer a mod, he was a participant. Some people just never do understand.

Have made a good study of the rules but for actual conduct i go by the phrase `everybody is entitled to their own opinion`. So i do my best not to get narky with anyone i might not agree with because i dont know why they feel a certain way or think a certain thing about somebody or something. For all i know they might have every right Just try to treat people as i would like to be treated myself . Nine times out of ten it works out fine on here. Just a pity it doesnt work out so well in my real life

It's easy for some people to attack others as long as they can remain anonymous. I try to take people at face value and keep any doubts to myself. You make and keep more friends that way.

When I used to inhabit chat rooms on AOL, mostly in sports rooms, and you always get the yahoos who would spout their opinions, usually "your team sucks!" and "my team rules!" I would respond with give me more substance to your statement, if you think my team sucks, then tell me why with lucid, logical arguments. They would either slink off because they couldn't bait me or they would respond with lucid and logical arguments. In forums, I just try to base my statements on fact or if I'm expressing an opinion, I try to express it in a way not to piss people off.
