Firefox 11+ versions have support via browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref to disable the feature to remember the download directory based upon the URL.

The browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref doesn't exist by default (it is hidden). Go to about:config and create a new Boolean pref with the name browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite and set the value to false.
Thanks

This has been driving me crazy for months!

I solved this problem by switching to Google Chrome. The save to feature is much easier to control. At least, I think it is!

So many different fresh OS installations (and new versions of Firefox, with "improved" features none of the users ever asked for ) over the years, and when I took a minute to contemplate about it, I realised I never actually dropped by here to say proper thanks to greyarea and comment on this.

This is not only a somewhat simple (very simple when you get acquainted with, which I was not before reading about it on this thread) solution (with no side-effects - security-wise and rest - that I'm aware of) but the ONLY solution that actually works.

After the first installation of the latest version of FF few years back, and making sure that I got "Always ask you where to save files" selected in the Tools > Options > General, I, blissfully unaware of the new implemented "improvement", automatically presumed the location would be the last DL folder, thus automatically hitting the "Save" button, without checking the actual drop zone, and after a long session of enjoying quality stuff on VEF I almost suffered nervous breakdown due to a mess of pictures landing themselves all over my HDD, with a mind of their own. This wasn't that much of an issue, but finding the proper solution was.

I really like FF, and this issue solely caused me searching for the alternative. This simple solution saved me from a whole lot of frustration. And for that, greyarea, thanks a bunch, again.

This still works in FF Quantum 61.0.2. It saved me one more time (new(old) machine) 2 days ago.
