"who once announced in front of the class that "If I would have been alive in 1900, I would have been a Socialist"
And you let him get away with that?
In my student days we tarred and feathered any of our lecturers at the first hint of progressive principles. Any second offence was immediately rewarded with burning at the stake. |

@martynz: I was the only known student with "libertarian" leanings, so he picked on me. He would sometimes act offended in his office when he advised me: "Are you still into this 'libertarian' thing?" Now, you notice that it was not a spontaneous student-led activism; it was teachers and professors pressuring students to take their side of historical interpretation.
Although he later admitted that, on matters of war and the draft, he was simpatico. I only ever bothered him about being Catholic, and he wasn't anymore; he also viewed porn... |

A friend and I were kicked out of a tutorial once for accusing, by implication, the lecturer of being middle class. He was outraged and became very angry with the pair of us. Didn't help by pointing out that he drove a volvo and wore a little corduroy sailing hat.

@Everyone: Yes, the irony of the middle-class liberal / Leftist who wants to have a Prius, a few "progressive" bumper stickers or causes to spout off about, and yet likes to go to a nice restaurant (private businesses, by the way!) and also drink fine wine (bourgeois luxury good to some...) is not entirely lost on me.

A senior exec of Tesco has claimed that white men will soon struggle to get jobs on the boards of major British companies. Predicably he has been called ridiculous and on the face of it many may think rightly so. But stop and think about it. If a tv reporter had said the same thing eight years ago about their media the reaction may have been the same. However, as the British members here will attest. there has been a vast amount of Asian and black reporters and newsreaders appearing on bbc,sky and channel 5 in the last few years. This is because of an overwhelming rush of 'positive discrimination' by these broadcasters. Similar steps have been mooted about company boards as far as women are concerned and race is sure to follow.

I'm still convinced that for the most part, this thread is a proof that scratch some one who is against political correctness and you won't find a brave defender of rights and freedoms, but an ignorant bigot masquerading as such.

Political Correctness is a form of mind control, bigotry to the power of ten. The Spanish Inquisition was PC, believe what we believe or else. Start scratching. As someone once said 'I deplore everything you say, but I will defend your right to say it'.

I going to use this quote to illustrate the reason that a lot of the anger involved with "Political Correctness" is usually misplaced. Now I bolded "or else" is to illuminate the element that turns Political Correctness from just an annoyance to something more threatening and that is power. Truth is a lot of these groups (racial & religious minorities, women, sexual ousiders) do not have any real power in this society to speak of but yet and still attacking these groups is increasingly becoming an frowned upon endeavor. Now the questions I like to ask is "who in power is fueling this" and "what are their motives for doing so". Now some will state the the ones in power are doing this purely for altruistic purposes but understanding those in power I see ulterior motives at play.
