i said this on another forum. it would seem the govt have people who work for them that are actually against the bill. both the police and security services, such as MI5 are against the bill. both claim that if the bill is brought in this country will be less safe, it will cost more money, systems will have to be upgraded, more staff will be needed and all because more encrypted data will be sent around the net. they say their job is already difficult enough without millions of files that are encrypted being sent around the net every day. this would mean that they would possibly miss out on important info concerning high level crime or terrorism and would actually discover some spotty oik in his bedroom sending porn to his mate or a copy of someones latest album.

Digital Economy Bill gets tweaked in the wash up
Thursday, 8th April 2010 POLITICS OLIVER SHAH LABOUR was on track to squeeze its controversial Digital Economy Bill into law last night, but was forced to drop clauses on regional broadcasting and extending Ofcom’s powers. Crucially, the Conservative opposition backed proposals to cut off the internet connections of people found illegally sharing files as the bill was rushed through a third reading in the end-of-parliament lawmaking process known as “wash up”. So now its law , without even a proper debate in the Commons. Possibly only a matter of time before access to Rapidshare , Megaupload , etc is cut off in the UK. As this was supported by all parties , i suppose i'll have to vote Green in the General Election .They really are all as bad as each other. |

I put a music file on a file host (MediaFire) ready to post a link to friends, when i came to get the link a few weeks later, it had already been downloaded 2 times, in spite of it being flagged as private. You can give them "the bill" at May, 6th!
Name the MPs, who supported the Digital Economy Bill. Make/create an internet cummunity - if it isn't already existing - to give resistance. If there wasn't a debate (in a democratic way) the chances are high, that the law becomes terminated soon, if there are some changes in May, 6th. Be sure, some other major changes of freedom in the internet will installed soon, if you don't find a way of resistance. To think, "I'm not affected" is really short thinking, believe it. And of course: stop buying any CD's and DVD's for a while.

When I get £25 taken out of my bank every month from those Virgin Media pigs I expect the freedom to upload and download what I want when I want without big brother sticking his bloody nose in. I can see me ditching the net soon if it gets worse.

Whole thing is just easy way to populists collect some points. If in China a censorship-system strong of ten-twenty thousand specialists is uncapable to filter or block entrance from people who really want to read and watch whatever they want, how much specialists and how many tons of advanced technology you need in Europe, IF your goal is 100% control? And of course: how much it cost?
I mean, if control fails the opposite populists are collecting points too, saying that the control must be stopped because it costs too much and It`s not working completely. 99% control is almost like no control. When a populist politician or whoever starts his/her already doomed crusade against freedom of speech he/she usually uses word "ch*ldporn" as a main weapon because it makes 99,999% of people to see red, and when seeing red you stop all rational thinking and that`s when fanaticism comes in.

The controversial digital economy bill won its third and final reading last night, by 189 votes to 47.
MPs started debating for the remaining stages of the bill just before 21:00 BST. Toward 23:00 BST the government easily passed its amendments with a majority of 157. The final vote came at 23:15. The legislation allows for websites hosting the filesharing of pirated material to be shut down. The government has promised further consultation on the matter after the election. There have also been a number of concessions, with persistent copyright offenders only suffering action on the basis of clear evidence. Civil libertarians, privacy advocates, and many internet users are up in arms at the bill, which they see as an infringement of online freedom betraying a fundamental lack of understanding of how the internet works. "The social and cultural impact is not being teased out," said Tom Watson, former parliamentary secretary at the Cabinet Office. "The whole thrust of this bill is to reduce illegal infringement. That's a slightly naive way of doing it when what we should be having is a carrot and stick approach." But proponents say the measure will save jobs, by protecting Britain's creative industries from the piracy which is hitting revenue streams across the sector. MPs from all parties expressed frustration that such a controversial bill was given so little parliamentary time because of the election campaign.

Honest, as The English, we don't get up in the morning and think, who can we Lord it over today? They'll not be allowing English opinion in Hollyrood, but back to subject, I believe that at least there's people campaigning on the likes of Twitface etc. now. Only Europe can save Britain now? .. ... |
