I knew two different guys named Joel with rather cultured backgrounds (one worked at Thomas Video, which used to be one of the best video stores in the Greater Detroit area-even though it was all the way out in the squat suburb of Clawson.), and I asked each one what was the most awful, disturbing film they had ever seen. Both said 120 Days of Sodom.

If I am not mistaken, didn't the director get killed shortly after it's release?

FYI: this Israeli short film "Teddy Bear" is unconnected to the Danish film "10 Timer til Paradis" (aka "10 hours to paradise") which shares the same name and was made in the same year.

Synopsis (from IMDb):
A little girl thinks that her teddy bear comes to her at night. When she feels sick, her mother takes her to the doctor and finds out that she carries a little baby teddy bear inside of her.

I came across this short film on YouTube, while seeking the trailer for the other [Danish] "Teddy Bear" movie. Found it uncomfortable viewing.

We have some great films mentioned here.
Growing up I would have said:
Stephen Kings ‘IT’ (1990) A 2 part movie not a tv series. Clowns are not cool and the production and direction is fantastic.
The Omen (1976) with Gregory Peck. A horror classic about the devil’s spawn.
Rosemary’s Baby (1968) Mia Farrow is brilliant and the eerie atmosphere of the film burns long after the final scene.
More recently:
A Serbian Film (2010) A nasty storyline, with gritty acting but ultimately the film pushes the boundaries beyond dignity and descends into oblivion.
Irreversible (2002) I watched this because I love Monica Bellucci, before watching having no idea what I was getting myself into. I now wish I could erase this film from my mind.
Ils - Them (2006) Creepy french film about a couple being terrorized.
The Hills Have Eyes Part II (Remake) (2007) Gratuituous - with the most attractive soldiers ever seen on film, to be violated in sexually horrific ways.
Salems Lot (1979) Just don’t open the window....
I absolutely refuse to watch any of the Human Centipede films. I don’t understand these grotesque and tasteless pieces of film-making.

If you like to challenge yourself with films, I would however recommend the following:
I Saw the Devil (2010) Byung-hun Lee
Surveillance (2008) Julia Ormond
Good Time (2017) Robert Pattinson
