Brits say, 'Not by a long chalk'.
English-speaking North Americans say, 'Not by a long shot'. Strines say .......Buckley's?????????? I'll leave it for others to explain (if they can).

You've got two chances/choices..

Australians in states other than Victoria generally believe the idiom derives from the adventures of escaped colonial convict, William Buckley. Where i live it often applies to 'choices', such is the nature of this place |

My family is half Polish/German (my father was), half Italian/Sicilian (my mother was) and half French (I try to be, not easy, damn f*** country) and I have a surrealistic memory when I still was really kid (just living in France after years in Algeria.. I know, it's complicated, sry) of a German aunt suddenly visiting us in our recent house in France and knocking at the door.
My Mom, before to open the door, answered in French with her Italian accent : "Qui c'est ?" (aka "who is it ?) and my German aunt understood "Küsse" (aka "kisses" : it sounds almost same in French & German) and was asking (in German) who the hell she had to kiss before anybody opens that damn bloody door. And where the damn bloody hell she had to kiss that moron. My Polish/German aunt wasn't an easy lady It was really funny and an eternity of European languages trying to connect each others. We did it. And I had later lot of fun with my Polish/German uncle teaching me "Beer + Schnaps".. My Mom (RIP) finally opened the bloody door and we kissed my Polish/German aunt (RIP). Thanks God ! I'm fully and for ever European, only, deeply and joyfully. And I love our differences : they're precious. |

We used to have a rich tradition of our own slang...but you never hear kids say, 'bonza' or 'sheila' or 'stone the flamin' crows' any more. It's all American now.

Surely you must still go to the 'Dunny'? Is beer no longer served in "Demi's" and "Schooners"? No offense intended, down/up here (depending on your perspective) we used to say; 'May I have...' Thanks to the US, it's now; 'Can I get...' It must be all that self service

Belfast has its own kind of dialect. If I was to type it out very few would understand it. It is based on hiberno-english like all English spoken in Ireland. Exception is the far north east which has a lot of Scottish mixed in with it. A lot of people think Ian Paisley speaks Belfast, wrong, he's a country boy from Ballymena. Gerry Adams speaks Belfast.

The original English accent is the Northern one i.e. old Anglo-Saxon which the majority of Limey's spoke at the time just before the Norman conquest.
Queen's English has only been spoken for about 200 years. Bill Shakespeare probably would have had a Midland's accent..(Think Ozzy Osborne) Mick Jagger's accent is one of the weirdest accent's ever. |
