What about Joe Cocker...
He needs half a bottle of whiskey to fix his voice before he sings. But nevertheless he has one of the most distinctive and original blues voices..... .

Gene Simmons, and Ace Frehely.I doubt there are many bigger Kiss fans than me, but neither have great vocal range. The trick, I think, is that they mastered writing songs that were catchy, and matched the voice that performed them.
Also, Joey Ramone. HUGE Ramones fan, but the above is true for them as well. |

Can you imagine any of the classic, distinctive vocalists ... Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Roger Chapman ... going on something like The X-Factor? They probably wouldn't even make it past the auditions as everyone has to sound the bleedin' same these days!

Kelly Jones from Stereophonics has quite a gruff singing voice but strangely enough he is one of the best singers I've ever heard perform live.

Jarvis Cocker, not the greatest vocalist in the world but his voice works on the songs that he writes. In fact Common People is probably one of my favourite songs ever:-
