Default Cardinal Pell

Cardinal Pell has been convicted of sexually abusing kids. As one of the most senior members of the Catholic Church this shows just how deeply corrupt the whole institution is from bottom to top but even the Catholic Herald publication can't bring themselves to voice any contrition after he has been found guilty & is now under lock & key: https://catholicherald.co.uk/news/20...cardinal-pell/

As we all know, if you are accused of a sexual offence, particularly one involving minors, you are guilty until proven innocent. But it is a fact that Cardinal Pell has been convicted in a criminal court. If the Church wants to maintain that he has not received a fair trial, which seems to be the subtext of the Catholic Herald article, then they need to argue their point openly and on a legal basis.

No doubt Cardinal Pell intends to appeal against his conviction. Let his appeal be heard. But if he is still convicted on appeal, his dismissal, laicisation, unfrocking, call it what you will, should be automatic. Just as a solicitor, an auditor or another holder of a public office is automatically erased from the list on a serious criminal conviction, so should a priest be automatically erased from the register. Provided the judicial process is fair, there is no reason why the Church should procrastinate; indeed, by firing the man on the same day if he loses his appeal, the Church would be doing the only thing it can do which would make it more credible rather than less credible in the eyes of both lay worshippers and the rest of the world. Cardinal Pell has the right to a fair trial. But once that process is over, it is over, and the Church must not protect him if he is confirmed guilty.

'As we all know'? That's not true. Pell was a free man before he was found guilty. Now he's been locked up because of what he's been doing to little boys.

Yes but as you say the Catholic Herald 'seems' to imply that he's not received a fair trial but they cannot come out & say that he hasn't because they know that such a claim isn't justified so they won't come right out & say it.

And there's no doubt that a guilty man would do that too if he thought that there was even the slightest chance at all that he might change his fate wouldn't he? That's better than doing nothing because at least there's a slim chance that he might somehow get out of the fix he's in.

Yes in fact the pope should excommunicate him if he's really serious about making an example of all members of the church who wreck children's lives by raping them but it's too little too late. He never excommunicates anyone does he? He's only ever tried to cosmetically treat the problem by covering it up rather than coming down like a ton of bricks on every single priest, bishop or cardinal who's been raping innocent kids.

It's too little too late. The church went out of it's way to tell the police that it would deal with any disciplining required & rather lancing the boil while they could (it's come out as a syndrome existing within the church for many many decades if not centuries) they've let it feaster & now their reputation is beyond repair & they'll never get it back again.

I wouldn't care to trade places with him, that's a fact. But there was one case not very long ago when an RC archbishop was convicted of sex offences, but the conviction was thrown out on appeal because the evidence was much too thin. Cardinal Pell's case is only over when it's over.

But I would not bet a bag of aluminium washers on him winning his appeal.

If you talking of the Anti-Christ in the traditional meaning...the one who precipitates Armageddon, it's the current POTUS isn't it?

Trump is certainly reminiscent of Count Iblis from the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica two-parter, War of the Gods. I see too many similarities in him and his ascension to power, but in his followers, too.

For living Americans, I nominate George W. Bush (R) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (D).

These people are creepy: Hillary's voice is demonic and barks out orders, but there's something about that "smirk" on W. He also gave the devil's horn gesture with his hand.

For departed Americans, Nathaniel Bedford Forrest of the KKK. Scary-looking as fuck.
