There's an interesting full-length video of the incident taken by a member of the Black Hebrews, who was part of this story, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3EC1_gcr34 . The link is not an endorsement of the Black Hebrews, but their live video does show more than you've seen in the mainstream media's revisionism of the incident. The incident occurs later in the video:

1:10 Some Covington Catholic jackass takes off his shirt to start some sort of war chant.
1:12:16 Phillips starts drumming; he's walking in the mob's general direction, but they move towards him directly. Unfortunately, people holding cameras come up behind Phillips to block him from potentially backing off. The tone of the crowd is definitely mocking, and the video supports Phillips' claim that he was separating the Black Hebrews & the Covington Catholic kids. Presumably, it is around this time that the photo of the kid with the mocking face was taken. 1:15 The Black Hebrews start screaming at the mob, attracting some of them.
1:17-1:18 The Black Hebrews continue screaming, more audibly. Unfortunately, they made themselves scapegoats in this situation, by using the N-word multiple times.
1:19:29 A Covington Catholic student screams audibly, "Hey, we got one hoe! She ain't here!" (Translate: We have one black girl. She's not here.)

If you continue in the video, there's a lot of screaming of one particular Black Hebrews member at the crowd. Perhaps, Phillips did a service by stepping into a volatile situation, and then later, the mob of kids tired of the confrontation that they helped escalate. Eventually, their bus arrives.

There's also a video, not on YouTube yet, of two random teenage girls being harassed by a mob of the Covington Catholic kids, posted by @roflinds. Another Twitter-only video has an African-American teen being pushed, with the exclamation, "See, we have a N*****."

So, to summarize:

1. An all-boys Catholic high school, with a reputation of being an institution of coddling the racist children of racist parents, decide it's a great idea to counter-march the Womens' March, in a so-called "March for Life", receiving $130 a head for the trouble, which is an anti-abortion demonstration. So, the optics of a group of entitled white men telling women what to do with their bodies is a bad start.
2. Wearing their MAGA hats, they attract the attention of the Black Hebrews. Bad Idea Number 2.
3. Some poor Native American leader actually appears to step in to defuse the situation. Of course, in 2019, 100 people start taking videos and post them online. The behavior of the kids is highly disrespectful; to what degree may be a matter of debate, but if you're in DC with cameras everywhere, their behavior is Bad Idea Number 3, giving an opportunity to...
4. Given the recent confirmation to the Supreme Court of an older version of these Catholic high school kids, social media makes the videos go viral. Given that many are tired of entitled white affluent men running (and ruining) their lives & this country, this is not a surprising reaction.
5. The rich parents hire a PR firm to get out their "version" of the story (https://www.courier-journal.com/stor...eo/2638400002/), including threatening Twitter users with lawsuits if they tweet bad things about these precious snowflake children. Twitter reacts by making #CovingtonBoys trending topic #1, again, though a lot of bots, seemingly released by this PR firm, isn't helping. As a side note, it's telling that a PR firm was hired, rather than the more convincing act of saying, "We're sorry for the disrespect, but two groups of protesters approached us." Ultimately, neither any lawsuits, nor expulsions, will end up occurring, of course.
6. There is a great deal of reporting in the mainstream media as well, but rather than viewing the full video, they get a case of "affluenza", the disease of assuming that white kids never do anything wrong. Ultimately, readers & viewers of the mainstream media, who know what they saw, might question the media for sugar coating this.
7. Covington Catholic High School, and pretty much the whole state of Kentucky, in the minds of the average person, who doesn't drink the MAGA Kool-Aid, comes away, ultimately, with the correct impression about entitled, affluent southern white men. When historians look back at this incident, the photos in the scrum, of those students in blackface at a basketball game, and of them flashing white supremacist hand gestures will speak for themselves. Also, a group of brats who thought they might get into Harvard are now going to have to settle for the University of Kentucky. LOL

The White Teens and the Black Hebrews do not appear to be in each others faces. There is a big gap between them. The old man walks straight to the kneeling and chanting White Teens who have their backs to him. At most they seem to turn around to see this cause of the drumming and chanting as it comes right next to them.

The mocking face? He looks amused that an old man drumming and chanting in I guess an Indian dialect has come to their circle out of all the other places he could be doing his "thing." What is he suppose to look like?

Their school colors are black. It was a Blackout event, they were all suppose to be in black. Schools with purple have fans paint themselves purple. Fans shout at opposing players. Were they singing "Mammy"?

I had a friend who lived in Washington DC for a while. He said he never went to the National malls on the weekends, as there were always some groups protesting and making noise - disturbing any enjoyment one could get from the touristy sites.

A byproduct of the 1st Amendment. It does seem that some of them are resorting to making drama so they get some press, otherwise no one pays any attention to their theatrics.

The school and diocese have already made it clear that there will be consequences for these young men. Catholic schools do have guidelines and are about instilling morals and higher standards of behavior. Some parents will be unhappy. In the good/bad old days we knew better because there was much dread of facing parents after the school had called to report our transgressions. Even today, money only buys so much influence in Catholic schools.

Back in the day most Catholic schools had dresscodes or school uniforms - so sad seeing the schools allowing the kids to wear caps like that.
