You may have noticed from time to time that commentators, presenters etc say the word 'palpable'. Now I've often thought I knew what they meant but I have since learned that this assumption was wrong, so here is the true meaning of palpable and now at least I will know what people mean-never too old to learn new words.

Hamlet Act 5, scene 2 :-

Osric "A hit, a very palpable hit".

Trouble is people don't know their Shakespeare these days. Their loss.

And why you speak in the third person? I am intrigued.
Forsooth verily folk doth not knoweth their Hamlet or Shakespeare sirrah perhaps because they still have this stupid notion that it isn't cool to which I say "out, out! damn spot!"

Did anyone spot the story that a museum(I can't remember which one) has decided to reprint the marvellously informative manual Protect and Survive which the Government of the 80's was going to issue to all us citizens incase someone declared nuclear war on us. Such wheezes included building a shelter inside your house using a door battened across a wall, painting yourself white to deflect any blast and if you were outside when a bomb went off to lie down in a ditch or gutter and cover the back of your head-if not get inside a building...fat bloody chance of that if a bomb goes off the blast wave would be so strong it would blow the house to pieces(who needs the big bad wolf!) Thank god no-one published this otherwise the Government would be the only people left with no-one to govern except zombies or cannibals(assuming you hadn't a state-of-the-art bunker built in your garden.

I remember "Protect and Survive" - only realised it was about as useful as "Duck and Cover" after watching BBC's "Threads".....

Around this time, my second daughter, then thirteen had to watch a film in school, which basically was about a nuclear holocaust, she was very upset by it, and I wrote the teacher a letter, explaining that she had been very upset, and did the school really think that pumping this lefty propaganda down kids throats was appropriate, especially as about eighty percent of the school; were the children of serving soldiers, and the rest probably relied on the Army for its living! I also told him that she was not going to write the requested essay, but would write one about Aldershot Army Day instead!

The response was a lengthy letter explaining that far from being a trendy lefty, the teacher was a born again Christian, and had not been happy about the subject matter, he had received eighteen such letters it transpired, in those days Aldershot was very much a Military Town and home to most of Britain's Paratroopers. Needless to say, she did not have to write the essay, nor did anyone else, and the film 'when the wind blows' did not appear on to many Hampshire Schools Curriculum! After all the Royal Navy has quiet a large presence in Portsmouth too!

The best advice I ever saw about what to do in the case of a nuclear bomb warning was this: "Find a sturdy table and shove it in the corner of the room. Crouch under it with your head between your knees. Now kiss your ass goodbye."

Surviving a nuclear war maybe futile but surviving a nuclear attack (like terrorism) is feasible.

Surviving a nuclear attack - Irwin Redlener from about the 22 minute mark.

So non-trendy 'rightist' people are pro nuclear holocaust?

What was so upsetting about it?

A good teacher would've let his class write that essay, and make them write about how they agree or disagree on the shown film. You know, teach a kid how to formulate an opinion and have them think about stuff.

But yeah, heaven forbid a kid gets exposed to things or ideas that don't match the world views of their environment!
