A very good obituary on Niki Lauda.

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/o...-2019/4392929/

Ron Howard made a film in 2013 called "Rush" that chronicled the classic duel that Niki had with James Hunt.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1979320/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Niki was so courageous after he was nearly killed in a fiery wreck at the Nuburgring in 1976. Severely burned he returned to racing 6 weeks later at Monza and ended up losing the 1976 World Championship to James Hunt by a single point.

Niki was a true legend in Formula 1 and will be missed.

Niki Lauder RIP

Motorsports don't rank high or, to be honest, at all compared to other sports I casually watch or follow. On this occasion I read and watched videos about Niki Lauder. For me, his 3 world championships aside, what I was especially moved by was the respect and legacy he attained during this life from his formula 1 community to his fans and to the younger generation of race car drivers.

A minor (albeit not the best) example of this was soon as I typed Niki Lauder in the youtube search bar and down poured the page results with so many tribute videos dedicated to him.

As one gets older you look at life and people's achievements with different perspectives and I was moved to tears about what his courage and legacy meant to all.

I am also happy to have spent the time in learning about this legendary man and for what he meant to people everywhere.

That last race (in Japan) was under dangerous conditions (fog and rain) and Lauda decided to stop racing (among other drivers) because of that conditions. With 3 points ahead in the overall standing, he knew quite well that he would risk the Championship. Hunt went on in the race and came in third to become World Champion by 1 point ahead of Lauda ...
