Default it's snowing in Maryland

The latest load of bollocks comes from the snowflakes at the University of Maryland.

Students calling themselves "Project UMD" have released a list of demands in their effort make the campus more amenable to "marginalized, American Indian, black, latinx, LGBTQIA+ (this acronym seems to get longer every time I see it), muslim, pro-Palestine, and undocumented" students.

This latest round includes scholarships for “students of marginalized communities,” a ban on Columbus Day, beginning every on-campus event with an acknowledgement that “this is Indigenous Land,” that African American professors get tenure, that preferred pronouns are included on rosters, and that “queer diversity training” is required.

Not to be left out, muslim students also want “one room in each major building designated for prayer” and “shuttle services for Muslim students to have access to a place of worship.” (where are the 'separation of church/state' people now?)

In another attempt to remain relevant, the pro-Palestine students want the administration to condemn the “conflation of pro-Palestinian activism with Anti-Semitism,” claiming that “pro-Palestinians do not reject the human rights of any group of people.” (really?)

No Jewish student organizations have joined this group.

Of course, these snowflakes also expect the University to publicize these demands, basically making sure that every student on campus is aware of their collective "plight".

The University is a public institution (e.g. taxpayer funded) of nearly 40,000 students (both undergrad & grad schools). The average cost for in-state tuition is $25,000/year, out of state is $47,000/year.

Do the math. I'm sure parents who are out 100-200k for four years of this bullshit are proud that the one thing their graduate can put in their resume is that they demanded other people pay for their vision of social justice.

Happy New Year!

College is a place where we store physically mature young people who have demonstrated the potential for useful intelligence until their brains completely develop. Some fail to understand that it is their only chance in life to get regularly hammered and pursue casual sexual encounters before the realties of working and family life present the challenges and joys of adulthood. Oh well, they will live to regret their short sightedness.

It will be interesting to see what demands the school gives in to. If I am reading this right it will have less to do with being "Politically Correct" and more to do with being "Financially Correct"

As far as I was aware, despite the Christian meanings of BC and AD, they were just accepted for dating, pretty much losing the religious side of it as in Hoover for vacuum cleaners or Xerox for photcopiers.
Originally, BC/AD replaced the Roman year numbering, which started with supposed foundation of the city of Rome. Islam did a corresponding re-start of the year counter (and do to this day).

Ho Hum, bash the Christians again.
Well, if it's Christian-bashing then it does have religious significance after all.

Personally, I don't think this kind of re-branding is helpful in the wider cultural context, e.g. followers of other religions will see this as a cheap attempt to legitimize an inherently biased system with minimal effort, and the public at large will see it as yet another case of p.c. gone mad.

I noticed it today being used in the field of "bible archaeology" - where the re-branding serves a different purpose. Bible archaeology, as a discipline, appears to be split into two different approaches, i.e. (i) "the bible was right" approach which sets out with the distinct aim to prove that, and (ii) the "how accurate is the bible?" approach which takes the bible as an ancient source and cross-references its historical/cultural content with other ancient sources and archaeological findings and then checks what comes up as the most likely common story. To speculate: I can imagine that scholars following these different approaches abhor the opposite approach. In that context the use of "BCE" instead of "BC" makes some sense, to signal: we are taking approach (ii); even type (i) scholars may go along with that re-branding, as it promises a more scientific attitude.

Such re-namings of terminology that is "not quite right" are not uncommon in academia, I have seen this in my own field. Problem is: AD/BC is not just academic terminology, it is used by the public at large, which is most likely to resist the change.

Maybe we should just start dating things from the start of the Qin dynasty, meaning that we are entering the year 2238, unless the PRC wishes to start with its founding & it would be the year 68. However that would mean reprogramming enormous numbers of computers, so we will probably stick with 2017 however we want to characterize it. Most historians and biblical scholars believe the date of the Christ's birth was miscalculated anyway. 2017 CE will stay because it is too much trouble to change.

Default It's a Joke, Son

I wonder if the Fundamentalist Christian right would be amenable to using Protestant prayers in schools two days a week, Catholic prayers one day, Muslim prayers another, and rotating the fifth day through other faiths, with a couple of days a month used to teach agnostic and atheist arguments? Let the kids choose for themselves.

Or, we could set aside a time for prayer and send the kids to the prayer room of their choice. I predict that since the unaffiliated, agnostic, and atheist kids would get to go outside to play, they would shortly be the dominant group.

Yes, that's simply it. In the French revolution they renamed the months, because they were named after Roman gods/emperors/numbers, but that didn't prevail. Our days of the week are still named after Nordic gods, it was too much trouble to change that, even in our fundamentalist Christian past.

Sometimes it is worth going through such a change though, e.g. when decimal numbers replaced the old Roman numerals. The metric system would be another example of that ilk, and that it did not make it in the US and only partially in the UK is mostly because its benefits are more felt in science/engineering than in everyday life.

Have you ever asked the question "How did the alternative lifestyle community gain so much power in the recent years? Understanding the answer will make you realize that this is not political correctness at all...

Easy, they don't stop pressing their beliefs, even sensationalise it and hope the weaker minded catch onto it and it slowly grows ( like a cancer) from there.

It hasn't been recent years either, it's been a slow but steady build up since probably early 90's I reckon, at least I've noticed it down here at the ass end of the planet.
