Frustrated With Search Function

After dropping serious $ on yet another magazine, I see it has already been posted here.
This is the third time this has happened in the past 2 weeks, and seems whenever I do a search, the results are always misleading.
If the results are to include all keywords, why do 'teenage dream girls' and 'teenage dreamgirls' result in 2 different search results?
(Should the fact that there is a space in one really have that much of an effect?)

The logic used in the vB search function can be a bit of a challenge. In this particular case, if you enter *teenage dream*, it does return the desired result.

Quotation marks (as you might use in google) don't work. Also, the default logic is OR so you would have found threads with teenage, threads with dream and threads with both, but not threads with dreamgirls. It switches to AND if you don't return any thread results and subsequently switch to searching posts.

Alternatively, send one of us a PM - we don't mind investing time for contributing members.

nope, it's AND. a while ago i thought the same, but it's wrong.

if you want to gain "teenage" or "dream", you need to add OR between both searchwords. using just "teenage dream" by default quick- and advance search, the engine searchs in entire posts (or only titles if you've used this filter in advance search - this narrows the results a lot, but often doesn't give what you're looking for and you might think it's not available) for threads (or posts, if you've made the setting to receive posts as result) having both searchwords included.

the asterisk is indeed helpful, but you should know how to use it:

dream*
finds Dream and words starting with Dream

*dream
finds Dream and words ending with dream

knowing this, the search term "dream* *girls" finds all "Dream Girls" as well as all "Dreamgirls".
while "*dream girls*" will give you "WhateverDream Girlsthread" or "American Dream Girls Nation" or "Dream Girls" alone.

it's because each word is treated as separate, single word. VEF search won't find "dream" and/or "girls" in "dreamgirls". it also won't find these words if you add the OR statement. you have to use asterisks instead.

so, the most suitable search term for your original request should have been

teenage dream* *girls

you can use same term either per quick search or in advance search (here: search in posts), ask to view posts as result and (if advance) you can specify the forums you want to include to narrow the result, if you like (e.g. "classic magazines" and "modern magazines" - hold CTRL key to select more than 1 forum).

I sit corrected regarding the default AND and not OR.

However, whilst what hos says might be technically correct, no-one is going to bother going through that much hassle so, in response to the original question, if you have material to post just send us a PM if you are unsure whether a mag thread exists.

The default is set to that for me. The issue is that 'titles' is not just thread titles, but possibly post titles as well (and possibly more).

For example: a search for 'climax' with the search set to titles, returns set to threads and forum set to Classic Magazine Scans (top level), returns this post:

which doesn't contain the word 'climax' anywhere. My guess is the title was changed at some point, or the post was originally in another thread.

I'm afraid patience is the only solution.
