The man is a merchant seaman whose ship,an oil tanker has been sunk by a U Boat,The point is that the true cost of petrol was in the lives of the men of the Merchant Navy not in a few pennies more at the pump.

The WW2 UK government had decided to increase the price of petrol. In response, the Daily Mirror published Philip Zec's cartoon as a warning to the general public against wasting petrol (as Mal has correctly posted). The problem was that then Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Minister of Supply Herbert Morrison along with others in the government misinterpreted Zec's cartoon as an apparent attack against petrol companies appearing to profit at the expense of the sailor's life. While times may have changed, the power of Zec's cartoon can still outrage. The late cartoonist Leslie David (Les) Gibbard re-worked Zec's cartoon in 1982, as a response to the sinking of the Belgrano during the Falklands war. The Guardian published Gibbard's version of the cartoon, with the updated quote: Quote:
The following information sourced from Wikipedia's profile of Les Gibbard: Gibbard later stated: "I was unaware of the furore caused by it until I returned home later the following day to barrage of phone calls asking me how I proposed responding to being called a traitor." The cartoon was raised in the House of Commons and was cited as evidence, by the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher that the British media did not support military action, and rival newspaper The Sun also accused Gibbard and The Guardian of treason: "What is it but treason for The Guardian to print a cartoon, showing a British seaman clinging to a raft... isn't that exactly calculated to weaken Britain's resolve at a time when lives have been lost, whatever the justice of her cause?" The criticism in turn led to The Sun’s leader-writer being ejected from the National Union of Journalists for “unfraternal behaviour

Actually some bloody silly things were don e by the Thatcher government at the time=one of which had us shaking our heads here in NZ was instructing the BBC to ban the song 'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' by the NZ pop group Split Enz which came out in 1982.
See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wswFjuJPbxg -which conveniently has the lyric s added. for reasons which defy any logical explanation --but say a lot about whatever Whitehall apparatchik didn't get the song's meaning......and to link that to the Falklands issue would require drawing a bow so long you couldn't see either end with a telescope! |

It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday." "Very few of the so-called liberals are open-minded.... They shout you down and won't let you speak if you disagree with them." "I'd like to know why well-educated idiots keep apologizing for lazy and complaining people who think the world owes them a living." "A friend of mine told me to shoot first and ask questions later. I was going to ask him why, but I had to shoot him." "Male menopause is a lot more fun than female menopause. With female menopause you gain weight and get hot flashes. Male menopause ? you get to date young girls and drive motorcycles." "When you come slam bang up against trouble, it never looks half as bad if you face up to it." "Sure I wave the American flag. Do you know a better flag to wave?" "Life is getting up one more time than you've been knocked down." "I've always followed my father's advice: he told me, first to always keep my word and, second, to never insult anybody unintentionally. If I insult you, you can be goddamn sure I intend to. And, third, he told me not to go around looking for trouble." "The hyphenated American is ridiculous. But that's what we have to put up with. I think that any person that's in the United States is better off here than they would be where they came from." "The guy you see on the screen isn’t really me. I’m Duke Morrison, and I never was and never will be a film personality like JOHN WAYNE. I know him well. I’m one of his closest students. I have to be. I made a living out of him."
